Thanksgiving Message from the President

Thanksgiving Message from the President

It has been my privilege to be the president of Queens College for over eight years now. But I have never been as impressed with my colleagues and our students as I have been this year. At a time of financial austerity and unprecedented problems, the college has come together as never before.

The tornado brought out the best in our community, with Buildings and Grounds working tirelessly to make sure our campus was safe for all. Many of our students and staff members also helped by going out into the surrounding neighborhoods to lend a hand wherever they could.

I am also grateful to all those who have worked to implement CUNYfirst. As with any major change in operations, CUNYfirst has had its share of glitches. However, the determination of everyone involved to fix any problems gives me great confidence that CUNYfirst will be a success once it is in place.

This year we also faced major challenges and uncertainty on the budget front. Currently we are taking a hit with the early retirement incentive as we cannot replace everyone who leaves. But the way our campus has worked together to make sure our students do not suffer from a shortage of personnel has been truly inspiring.

In the spirit of caring for others at this time of year, I would ask that we all be more alert to any problems of bullying that might occur on our campus. We have seen too many young people take their own lives following such incidents. If you believe that you are a victim of bullying or know someone who is, please know that we have many places you can turn to for support, including

Vice President of Student Affairs: Frese Hall 102, 718-997-5500, email VPSA@qc.cuny.edu

Behavioral Intervention Team: Student Union 300, 718-997-3960, or file an online report at http://sl.qc.cuny.edu/behavioral.php

Public Safety: Main Gate Office, 718-997-5912

We all have so much to be grateful for, and I know that you, my friends and colleagues, will be among the first people I will think of this Thanksgiving when I count my blessings.
