The Title: Historical Contribution of Koreans to Chinese Culture
(중국문화에 공헌한 한국의 인물과 사상)
Presenter: Dr. Chai-Shin Yu, Distinguished Professor of Korean Studies, Department of East Asian Studies, University of Toronto

Summary: Many simply think that East Asian culture and its thought were developed and influenced only by China, or it rooted in China. But Korea has a five thousand year history which encompasses many independent philosophies and culture, and the truth is that East Asian culture was established harmoniously by China and Korea together because over the past centuries, a large number of Koreans have actively contributed to the advancement of Chinese culture. I would like to prove the documentary evidence of some of these examples such as General Ko Sunji, monk Wonchk, Hye Cho, Wonhyo, Chae Chi Won, Tóegye.
I brought from China the records about more than 1000 Koreans who contributed to China’s politics, religions and culture in the past . Generally, people think that only Chinese culture influenced Korea, but as I will explain it, countless Korean scholars contributed to Chinese culture. Therefore East Asian religious culture was developed and achieved by China and Korea together.
동아시아의 문화라 하면 일반적으로 중국이 주류가 되어 한국과 일본 및 월남을 한 문화권으로 묶어 취급해 왔다. 그러나 동아시아의 문화는 중국과 한국이 함께 이룩해 왔다고 볼 수 있다. 그 이유는 중국의 문화를 이룩하는데 한국인들이 많이 활동했기 때문이다. 대표적인 공헌자들로 고선지, 원측, 혜초, 원효, 장보고, 최치원, 이퇴계 등이 있다. 이외에도 명, 청대에 중국의 정치와 문화에 기여한 한국인이 천 여명이 넘는다.
결론적으로, 동아시아의 문화는 중국과 한국이 같이 이룩하였고, 한국은 5천년 역사를 가진 나라로 한국문화는 중국이나 일본과는 다른 독창성을 가지고 있다.
