We are pleased to announce the Second Annual Conference and Gala for The Research Center for Korean Community at Queens College. The conference will be held from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM on Friday, November 18, 2011, at Flushing Hospital Medical Center. The reception and gala will take place after the conclusion of the conference at Kum Gang San Korean Restaurant, 138-28 Northern Blvd, Flushing, NY 11354.
The main theme of this year’s conference is ethnic and racial identities among 1.5- and second-generation Korean Americans. A dozen Korean Americans have written personal narratives discussing their retention of ethnic cultural characteristics, their experiences with racism and prejudice, their Korean vs. non-Korean social networks, their perceptions of South Korea, and other factors that have contributed to their ethnic and racial identities. The participants will give oral presentations of their essays, which will be published some time next year in an edited book.
The stories are as diverse as they are interesting. Some of the authors were born and raised in the United States, while others migrated from Korea as children or young adults. Some of the stories address issues such as the role of the church in Korean American social life, dealing with subtle and not-so-subtle prejudice and discrimination, sexuality, being perceived as “model minorities,” using food as a method of maintaining a connection to Korean culture, and trying to disprove and deconstruct stereotypes of how proper Korean Americans should think and behave. One common thread among all the essays is the ambiguous sense of being caught between two worlds. Sometimes, many Korean Americans feel neither Korean nor American. However, at other times, they feel both Korean and American. These stories give voices to the complicated nature of trying to balance assimilation with retention.
