Katherine Antonova, "Varieties of Separate Spheres: A Case from 19th-Century Russia"
Date: Thursday, May 17, 2012 11:30 AM
Location: Museum of Motherhood, 401 E. 84th St., New York, NY
Details: http://www.mommuseum.org/upcoming-conferences/
As part of the Evolving Motherhood conference at the Museum of Motherhood, Professor Antonova will present a historical case study of the diaries of Natalia Chikhacheva, a Russian gentry mother in the 1830s and 1840s, and the diaries of members of her household. Natalia Chikhacheva defined motherhood as ensuring her children’s material comfort, while a wet nurse and nanny nurtured them and her husband was in charge of upbringing. This seemingly unusual arrangement was not considered unusual or a challenge to the then prevalent notion of a woman’s “natural” place in the home. |
