Welcome

General Education at Queens College invites students to explore the world through a broad range of courses with a global focus that reflects the diversity of our student body. This set of innovative courses, called General Education or Perspectives on the Liberal Arts and Sciences, provides students with the opportunity to study various areas of knowledge from diverse perspectives, and to familiarize themselves with new ways of understanding the world around them. General Education at Queens College is drawn from a rich liberal arts tradition that recognizes the importance of a well-rounded, well-educated public for the functioning of democracy itself. Such an education must be more than preparation for a specific vocation, it must teach students to make real connections between different areas of study, and to use what they learn to better understand themselves. A college education should enable students to cultivate the critical and creative abilities they need to negotiate a fast-paced and increasingly interconnected world, and the General Education curriculum ensures that Queens College students develop these abilities as a fundamental part of their college experience.

At Queens, we are working to make General Education the college major. The Office of General Education oversees the development, management, and coordination of the General Education program, which includes a number of related projects: organization and implementation of the curriculum, development of general education learning cohorts, research on student learning and learning with technology, faculty development, and innovative teaching grants.
