Summary
: On April 29, 1992, riots broke out in South Central Los Angeles, a predominantly black and Latino area. Approximately 2,300 Korean stores located in SC Los Angeles and even Koreatown were destroyed during the three days of rioting. Korean merchants became the major victims of the 1992 riots, absorbing about 45% of the total riot damages. The victimization of the Korean merchants, the LA Police Department's inactivity to protect Korean merchants, and the federal and local government's meager efforts to compensate Korean merchant victims politicized the Korea community. Many Korean empowerment organizations were established in Los Angeles, New York, and other Korean communities following the riots. Korean American Voters' Council is one of the Korean empowerment organizations created in lieu of the impact of the victimization of Korean merchants during the riots.

In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the LA riots and reflecting on the political development in the Korean community in the United States, the Research Center for the Korean Community and Korean American Voters Council are co-organizing the forum on the LA riots.
