The Theme: Korean Communities in Major Overseas Korean Population Centers

For this conference, we have invited twelve scholars of overseas Koreans from different major Korean population centers around the world, including Toronto, Sydney, Osaka (Japan), Tokyo, Shenyang (China), Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture (China), Sao Paolo-Buenos Aires-Asuncion (Brazil-Argentina-Paraguay), Beijing (China), Chicago, Washington DC-Baltimore, NY-NJ, and Los Angeles. In order to systematically examine similarities and differences among Korean diasporic communities, we will focus on the following six topics for discussion: (1) History of Immigration, (2) Settlement Patterns, (3) Economic Adaptations, (4) Relationships with Other Ethnic Groups, (5) Korean Community Organizations, and (6) How They Preserve their Korean Culture and Tradition/Ethnic Identity. These six topics will be discussed by each presenter in relation to his/her respective Korean population center.
