Queens has the second largest population of Sikhs in America. The Punjabi language is closely tied to the Sikh religion. The Sikh religion uses Punjabi in all of its religious ceremonies and rituals. The Sikh people who speak Punjabi are from the Northern state of Punjab in India. Indian born people and their descendants are estimated to make up 4.9% of the population in Queens, with Punjabi speakers estimated at 2.5% of the total Queens population. Queens neighborhoods that are enclaves for Indian people include Jackson Heights, Flushing, Jamaica, and Richmond Hill. These neighborhoods house many Gurdwaras, which is the place of worship for Sikhs. They also have Punjabi groceries and stores that provide the neighborhoods with cultural and religious goods and services.
