The Physics Department is a small department with a core of faculty engaged in cutting-edge research involving optics and photonics. Our professors are recipients of prestigious honors, such as National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER awards and NSF, Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of Energy (DOE) research grants. They are frequently invited to speak at international conferences and act as referees for major scientific publications and funding agencies. The faculty members involved in the PSM program, and their research fields, are described below. Clicking on a professor's name will redirect you to that faculty member’s webpage.

  • Fred Cadieu (Professor): fabrication of new magnetic thin film materials and magnetic memory structures

  • Lev Deych (Professor): theory of optical resonators, optomechanics, and coupled light-matter excitations in periodic semiconductor nanostructures

  • Azriel Genack (Professor): experimental studies of transport of light and microwaves in disordered and periodic structures

  • Igor Kuskovsky (Associate Professor): experimental optics and magneto-optics of quantum dots, nanocrystals, nanowires and nanorods

  • Alexander Lisyansky (Professor): theoretical studies of spatio-temporal dynamics of the SPASER – a newly discovered nanometallic device

  • Vinod Menon (Assistant Professor): experimental studies of light-matter interaction in microcavities, waveguides and in artificially engineered optical metamaterials

  • Lev Murokh (Assistant Professor): theoretical studies of electronic transport in nanoscale structures, including energy conversion in living organisms

  • Luat T. Vuong (Assistant Professor): experimental studies of the self-assembly and pattern-formation dynamics of chiral nanocomposites such as solution-processed metamaterials
