Professor Elissa Bemporad's book, "Becoming Soviet Jews: The Bolshevik Experiment in Minsk" (Indiana University Press, 2013) has won the National Jewish Book Award 2013 for Writing based on Archival Material (JDC-Herbert Katzki Award).
Additionally, Dr. Bemporad's book was a finalist in the 2013 NJBA category on "Modern Jewish Thought and Experience" (Dorot Foundation Award in Memory of Joy Ungerleider Mayerson).
Dr. Bemporad's research focuses on the social and cultural history of the Jews of
Russia and the Soviet Union. Her book explores the social integration and
acculturation process into the Soviet system as experienced by the
Jewish population of the city of Minsk during the interwar period. A Russian translation is forthcoming with ROSSPEN in the
series "History of Stalinism".
