Steve Malin is an Associate with Aronson Johnson Ortiz (AJO), a Philadelphia-based institutional quantitative value equities manager with approximately $18 billion in assets under management. Steve joined AJO in September 2011, where he is a senior member of both the research and portfolio management teams. He joined AJO after leaving AllianceBernstein, where he was Senior Portfolio Manager from 2007-2011 serving clients with equity, fixed income, multi-asset and real asset strategies.
Prior to accepting a position at AllianceBernstein, Steve enjoyed a 16-year career at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. As an officer of the Bank from late-1990 to 2007, he served in a number of leadership roles in the Communications Group. He also was Corporate Secretary, reporting directly to the Bank’s President and the Chair of its Board of Directors. As a Senior Economist, he provided counsel to the Bank’s Presidents, mainly on Regional Economics matters, wrote more than two dozen speeches and served as an official spokesperson to the media and distinguished guests of the Bank. Steve also developed some of the most innovative economics and financial literacy programs at any public-sector institution in the world.
Between 1977 and 1990, Steve was Senior Economist, as well as the founder and Director, of the Regional Economics Center at The Conference Board. Over 13 years, Steve’s research covered monetary and fiscal policy and, later, U.S. economic developments on a region-by-region basis. Steve also built a private economics consulting practice that served 15 Fortune 500 companies, served on two national commissions on competitiveness (by invitation from former Presidents of the United States), and appeared frequently on radio and television.
Steve currently serves on the faculty at Queens College, where he is an Adjunct Professor of Economics specializing in macroeconomics. He has over 30 years of experience in the classroom, mainly at Queens College, his alma mater. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from QC with a B.A. in 1972, earned his M.A. the following year and completed his Ph.D. in February 1980 at the City University Graduate Center.
Steve’s passion, other than teaching economics at QC, is coaching baseball, which he has done for three decades. Currently, he is a coach with the college team of the Long Island Astros, which boasts having five QC ballplayers on its roster.
