Research & Professional Interests

Dr. Cool joined the faculty in 1997, after completing the Ph.D. in Communication, Information & Library Studies from Rutgers University. She also holds an M.L.S. from Rutgers, and a Master’s degree in Communication from the University of Pennsylvania. In the GSLIS, Dr. Cool regularly teaches LBSCI 709 (Research in Library & Information Studies) LBSCI 753 (Digital Libraries) and LBSCI 754 (Human-Computer Interaction). Professor Cool maintains an active research agenda, with a focus on studies of human information behavior, in particular help-seeking interactions. Her research has been federally funded by the Institute for Museum & Library Services. During summer 2011 Dr. Cool was an invited lecturer at Nankai University in Tianjin, China, where she presented results of her help-seeking research. Dr. Cool is the co-editor, with Dr. Ng, of the forthcoming book, Recent Advances in the Design, Construction and Evaluation of Digital Libraries, to be published in 2012 by IGI Global. She and Dr. Ng have also been named co-editors of the International Journal of Digital Library Systems. In 2012, Cool & Ng received a faculty research enhancement grant from the Queens College Division of Social Sciences to support their current study of frustration behaviors during information seeking in digital libraries. An overview of this project was presented in June 2012 at the conference Libraries in the Digital Age, held in Zadar, Croatia. Apart from the GSLIS,  Dr. Cool is a literacy volunteer with Pro-literacy of America, and an active member of the National Organization of Italian American Women.
