Undergraduate major offered: Childhood Education, Grades 1–6 

The Queens College undergraduate program in elementary education prepares students for the New York State Initial Certificate in Childhood Education, Grades 1–6. The program can only be taken as a co-major; students must also complete a co-major in one of the liberal arts and sciences programs.

Graduate programs offered:

The Department of Elementary & Early Childhood Education (EECE) offers graduate programs leading to New York State certification in Childhood Education, Grades 1–6, and Early Childhood Education, B–2. The programs prepare teachers to support learning and development within the family, culture, and community contexts of students and schools. EECE programs share a commitment to educational practices that honor linguistic and cultural diversity, and integrate technology and instruction to enhance learning.

The department offers a 39-credit program leading to the Master of Science in Education degree (MSED) for students who have completed a teacher certification program in elementary/early childhood and currently hold a provisional or initial teaching certificate. Students interested in pursuing a literacy certification can apply to the MS Literacy Teacher, B-6 program leading to New York State professional certification in Literacy Education, B-6, and the degree of Master of Science in Education. 

For students who have completed their master's degree, the department offers a 15-credit Post-Master’s Certificate Program resulting in a Certificate of Advanced Study in a specific field.

For students who did not complete an elementary education certification program as undergraduates, EECE offers a 45-credit program leading to the Master of Arts in Teaching degree (MAT). Courses are generally offered in the late afternoon and evening. Part-time students normally register for 6 credits each semester. A typical full-time program would be 12 credits each semester and 6 credits in the summer.

Students interested in bilingual education have several options, including a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) with Bilingual Extension, a Master of Science in Childhood Education with Bilingual Extension, and an Advanced Certificate in Bilingual Education.

Important note:
Undergraduate students who are interested in becoming elementary school teachers must seek advice about program planning as early as their freshman year. The department holds informational sessions about New York State certification and program requirements several times each semester. First and second-year students considering careers in elementary education are encouraged to attend. Contact the Division of Education (718-997-5258) for the schedule.

Successful completion of the approved undergraduate program leads to recommendation by the Division of Education for New York State Certification of Qualification for Teaching Childhood Education, Grades 1–6. Because requirements for certification in New York State may change and result in program modifications, it is essential that prospective EECE students keep informed by maintaining communication with the department.
