Cuba: A Literary Adventure

Conducted in English

For more than 50 years relations between the United States and Cuba have been strained, and there has been little opportunity for cross-cultural exchange between citizens of the US and citizens of Cuba, one of our nearest neighbors and—according to many people—it is one of the most beautiful and interesting places in the world.

A new climate of openness to cultural exchange on both sides offers students the historic opportunity to explore the history, literature, and culture of Cuba—as well as the nature of Cuban/American relations—in Cuba. To develop an understanding of all this, we will read fiction, nonfiction and poetry, and will view films by both Cubans and non-Cubans. As we experience the exciting sights, sounds, and tastes of Havana, the texts we are reading will come alive: and our reading and classroom discussions will be enriched by visits from local writers, as well as our explorations of Havana and the surrounding area.

Journal and other written assignments will encourage students to use their skills of observation and analysis to deepen their experience and enrich their understanding of this remarkable place and its people.

Excursion highlights: Museo de la Ciudad; National Union of Writers and Arts; Museo de la Revolucion; Associacion Cultural Yoruba de Cuba; Finca Vieja (Hemingway home); day trip to Matanzas. Farewell dinner and baile.

Classes are scheduled Monday to Friday

Travel during class time is strictly prohibited.
