Access to Research Program

The goal of our Access to Research program is to excite students about science and cultivate existing interest in biomedical research. Through an outreach campaign that targets all Queens College students, as well as students in our affiliated community colleges, we aim to attract motivated exceptional students into scientific research. By identifying this population early in their college careers, we hope to improve the research environment for all students and identify the best candidates to enter the MARC program. Students that begin research early are more likely to progress further on their projects, gain invaluable experience at scientific conferences, and produce publishable research results.

For most of the Access to Research students there is a "Science for Starters" class presenting current research at the level of Scientific American articles. We intermingle the Access to Research students with MARC students through attendance at colloquia, poster presentations given by MARC students at various meetings, and peer advising. We encourage students to attend departmental and biomedical research career seminars as well. The Access to Research program increases interest in the sciences and brings the academic level of Access to Research students to MARC U-STAR eligibility via academic advising; tutoring in gateway courses, and ensures the readiness of eligible Access to Research to enter the MARC Program.

  • Seminars about careers in science
  • Personal advisement by faculty
  • Research experience
  • Workshops and information sessions
  • Preferential registration into "Science for Starters" course
  • Preparation for application to the MARC program
