PROFESSOR LEE V. STIFF DELIVERS THE KEYNOTEADDRESS AT
THE NINTH ANNUAL TIME 2000 CONFERENCE

On Friday, 19 November, TIME 2000 hosted its ninth annual conference, Celebrating Mathematics Teaching. More than 300 high school students and 25 teachers were registered for the conference. Also in attendance were 80 undergraduates, 10 preservice teachers, and 10 college faculty members. The opening session featured a past president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Dr. Lee V. Stiff, professor of mathematics at North Carolina State University. His eloquent and passionate presentation, "Math Education Needs You! Answer the Call," set the tone for an outstanding conference. Local dynamic mathematics teachers made exciting presentations that involved the conference participants in mathematical investigations and explorations. The 80 TIME 2000 undergraduates volunteered to prepare for and assist at the conference. Five TIME 2000 graduates returned to be on the program and one participated in a panel discussion conducted by Senior Michelle Yacoub. Texas Instruments, Inc. donated calculators that were raffled off at the end of the conference. Math for America of the Simons Foundation is gratefully acknowledged for funding the conference again this year.
