Today's Tutors, Tomorrow's Math Teachers' Club Receives an Award

Today's Tutors, Tomorrow's Math Teachers, a tutoring club established by the TIME 2000 students, received an award from the Queens College Student Association for outstanding educational programming for 2002-2003.

On 29 May 2003, the second cohort of TIME 2000 graduated.

TIME 2000 Seniors Receive Graduation Awards

On Wednesday, 28 May 2003, graduating seniors received Recognition for their academic achievements. Rocio Saborido, Jacqueline Seenarraine, and Irina Zavurov received FREE Foundation scholarships to continue their graduate studies at Queens College. Irina and Rocio received the Herb Fremont Award for outstanding undergraduate work in secondary mathematics education.

​Class of 2003 Ready to Graduate

On Wednesday, 7 May 2003, the eight TIME 2000 seniors were honored at a graduation party in the Queens College Patio Room. More than 50 family, friends, and TIME 2000 students, faculty, and staff were on hand to congratulate them and view their e-yearbook, cleverly presented in a lesson-plan format with an "aim," "do now," and "summary." The seniors received awards from Dr. Artzt, Mrs. Weinman, and Ms. Val Baci.

​TIME 2000 Student Shares What She Learned at a National Conference

29 April 2003
At the April monthly seminar, TIME 2000 sophomore, Rebecca Steiner, made a presentation entitled, "Ad Infinitum," based on a session entitled, "An Excursion in Recursion," given by Gerard Berry and Catherine Eagen, at the 81st Annual Meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, on10 April, in San Antonio, Texas. Her participation in the meeting was funded by TIME 2000.

New Officers of the Tutoring Club Elected

The new officers of the TIME 2000-student-run tutoring club, Today's Tutors, Tomorrow's Teachers, for the 2003-2004 academic year were elected at the April 2003 seminar. The officers are: Vidya Sriprasad, President; Annie Ain,Vice President; Oi Shan Chi, Secretary; Isaac Borenstein, Treasurer.
Executive Assistant to the Queens College President Speaks at the March Seminar

On Tuesday, 18 March, former high school mathematics teacher, Sue Henderson, Executive Assistant to Queens College President James Muyskens, was the guest speaker for the March seminar. Her PowerPoint presentation was entitled, "Using Technology to Enhance Mathematics Instruction."


TIME 2000 Grads Return to Advise Undergrads

4 March 2003
On Tuesday, 4 March 2003, the class of 2002 were guests at the monthly seminar, held in the evening to accommodate their full-time teaching schedules. They were members of a panel, entertaining questions from the undergraduates about their teaching experiences. They distributed "Words of Wisdom," their e-mail addresses, and a collection of Web sites to assist the undergraduates on their journey to becoming secondary mathematics teachers. Everyone was so impressed with the graduates, that they will be invited back next year!


TIME 2000 Seniors Participate In Mock Interviews

4 March 2003
On Tuesday, 4 March 2003, Ms. Elizabeth Ophals, Principal, Louis Armstrong Middle School, and Ms. Kim Hirsch-Mennicucci, Mathematics Specialist, conducted mock job interviews for the student teachers. Two TIME 2000 seniors, Irina Zavurov and Rocio Saborido volunteered to be interviewed.

Museum Visit

8 January 2003
TIME 2000 students explored the relationships among film, video television, and mathematics, during an exciting visit to the American Museum of the Moving Image, in Astoria, Queens.

Student Presentations

At the monthly seminar, TIME 2000 seniors made presentations of lesson plans they created for their secondary mathematics methods course, based on articles from the Mathematics Teacher and Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School.

Freshmen at LAMS

9 December 2002
The culminating activity for the final fall 2002 observation visit at the Louis Armstrong Middle School (LAMS), East Elmhurst, was a discussion about teaching effectiveness. During a pizza lunch, freshmen in SEYS 221: Psychology of Learning Mathematics, listened to LAMS' eighth graders describe characteristics of great teachers.
Overcoming Math Anxiety

12 November 2002
"Overcoming Math Anxiety," presented by Ms. Susan Auslander, was the main topic of the November TIME 2000 Seminar. As future secondary mathematics teachers, the TIME 2000 students had the opportunity to discuss issues, symptoms, and problems related to math anxiety.

TIME 2000 Director Receives An Award

6 November 2002
Dr. Alice F. Artzt, Director of the TIME 2000 Program, and Professor of Mathematics Education, was recognized for outstanding educational leadership in mathematics education by the Trustees of the Goudreau Museum of Mathematics in Art and Science. The ceremony was held at the Swan Club, Roslyn, New York. In addition to her family, faculty, students, graduates, and high school mathematics faculty, administrators, and retirees were present to pay tribute to Dr. Artzt.

Japanese Lesson Study: Ideas for Improving Mathematics Teaching

8 October 2002
At the monthly seminar, Prof. Fran Curcio showed a videotape she created, Japanese Lesson Study: Ideas for Improving Mathematics Teaching, produced at Queens College by Rich Billay and distributed by the NCTM. The elements of Japanese lesson study were discussed in relation to the TIME 2000 Program.
​Welcome to the New Freshmen!

10 September 2002
At the first monthly seminar, the new freshmen were welcomed and they had the opportunity to meet informally with their TIME 2000 colleagues and teachers.
