TIME 2000 DIRECTOR HONORED

2 June 2005
On Thursday, 2 June 2005, Professor Alice Artzt, director of the TIME 2000 Program, and director of the secondary mathematics teacher preparation program, was honored by the Queens College (QC) Foundation. The prestigious Q Award was bestowed upon her at the annual awards dinner at the Marriott Marquis in New York City. The Q Award was instituted in 1990 by the QC Foundation to honor individuals whose lives serve as models for Queens College students. QC administrators, faculty, staff, and students were on hand to pay tribute to Dr. Artzt.

FOURTH TIME 2000 COHORT GRADUATES

On Thursday, 2 June, each of the 17 undergraduates in the fourth cohort of TIME 2000, received a bachelor's degree in mathematics with a minor in secondary education. Congratulations to the Class of 2005!

TIME 2000 SENIOR RECEIVES FREMONT AND FREE AWARDS

1 June 2005
At the Secondary Education and Youth Services Department (SEYS) Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, 1 June, Luis Saltos, TIME 2000 member of the Class of 2005, received the Herb Fremont Award and a FREE scholarship. The Fremont Award is given to an outstanding senior who will enter the graduate program in secondary mathematics education following graduation from Queens College. The FREE scholarship, also awarded for academic excellence, supports graduate education at the College.

TIME 2000 GRADUATE RECEIVES THE ALICE ARTZT AWARD FOR MATHEMATICS TEACHING

At the Secondary Education and Youth Services Department (SEYS) Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, 1 June, Tara Wachter, member of the first TIME 2000 Cohort, the undergraduate Class of 2002, received the Alice Artzt Award for Mathematics Teaching. The cash award is bestowed upon a master’s degree graduate for academic excellence, passion for teaching mathematics, and commitment to the profession.

On Monday, 16 May, TIME 2000 senior, Rebecca Steiner, was awarded the Eva and Jacob Paulson Memorial Award, a top honor in mathematics.

On Monday, 16 May, TIME 2000 senior, David Chow, was awarded the Arthur Sard Memorial Award, a top honor in mathematics.
CLASS OF 2005 READY TO GRADUATE

11 May 2005
On Wednesday, 11 May, seventeen TIME 2000 seniors, undergraduates in the fourth TIME 2000 cohort, were honored at a graduation party in the Queens College Patio Room. More than 100 family, friends, and TIME 2000 students, faculty, and staff were on hand to congratulate them and view their clever videotape and PowerPoint yearbook. The seniors received awards from Dr. Alice Artzt, Director of the TIME 2000 Program, Mrs. Naomi Weinman, Program Administrator, and Ms. Ilyse Baum and Mr. Mamadou Diallo, outgoing officers of the Tutoring Club, MT4.

SEMINAR FOCUS: GEOMETRY AND DESIGN

At the monthly seminar on Tuesday, 19 April, three professors from the SUNY Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), shared ideas for integrating mathematics with art and architecture. Professors Clare Johnson, Calvin Williamson, and Lasse Savola’s presentation was entitled, “Geometry and the Art of Design.”
TIME 2000 Juniors Share What They Learned at LIMAÇON

On 22 March, 2005, TIME 2000 juniors Diallo, Irene, Kristina, Louise, May, Raluca, Sahil, and Shari shared lessons learned at LIMAÇON, a mathematics education conference attended by TIME 2000 students on Friday, 18 March 2005.

TIME 2000 Graduates of 2002-2004, Return to Give Advice to the Undergraduates

On Tuesday, 22 February 2005, TIME 2000 graduates from the classes of 2002-2004, were guests at the monthly seminar, held during the winter recess to accommodate their full-time teaching schedules. The graduates were members of a panel, entertaining questions from the undergraduates about their teaching experiences. Just as successful as the panels on 17 February 2004, and 4 March 2003 (see Past Events below), everyone was so impressed with the graduates that they will definitely be invited back next year along with members of the Class of 2005!

​TIME 2000 Graduates Speak about Technology

26 January 2005
Edna Broukhim and Lena Grillo, Class of 2002, made a presentation entitled, “Teaching Transformations using Technology” at the Annual Reunion Dinner for the Secondary Mathematics Education Program at Queens College, hosted by the director, Professor Alice Artzt. The presentation explored innovative and exciting ways to incorporate Geometer’s Sketchpad and the TI 83/84 into lessons focusing on transformations. They also made a presentation at the T3 conference in October 2004. On 18 March, they will make a similar presentation at LIMAÇON. As soon as their Web site is up, handouts will be available at

​TIME 2000 Seniors Share Exciting Mathematics Activities

At the December seminar, four TIME 2000 seniors, Annie, Ana, Michelle, and Venessa, were invited to share the lessons they created for assignments in their education courses. They demonstrated that they are well prepared to begin student teaching in spring 2005.

​Louis Armstrong Middle School Students Visit time 2000 Freshmen in SEYS 221

7 December 2004
After 10 weeks of hosting visits of the TIME 2000 Freshmen during their mathematics lesson, on Tuesday, 7 December, 8th graders from the Louis Armstrong Middle School (LAMS) accompanied their teacher, Ms. Merna Porter, to Queens College, to participate with the TIME 2000 freshmen in their Psychology of Learning Mathematics course taught by TIME 2000 Program Director, Dr. Alice Artzt. The topic of discussion was attribution theory. Following the class, everyone celebrated the end of the semester with a pizza party.

TIME 2000 Students Appear on the CBS Early Show

On Tuesday, 23 November 2004, a group of TIME 2000 students accepted CBS’s invitation to appear on The Early Show. Waving their placards, they enthusiastically greeted the viewers, promoting the positive image of mathematics.


TIME 2000 Students Protest Poor Image of Mathematics

19 November 2004
Just before the start of the Third Annual Conference, TIME 2000 students conducted a protest bringing attention to the poor image of studying and teaching mathematics. They got the attention of the Daily News, Newsday, and CBS. They were invited to appear on a news broadcast on CBS on Tuesday, 23 November 2004.
TEXAS INSTRUMENTS VISITS TIME 2000

9 November 2004
At the monthly November seminar, Dr. Margo Mankus, software designer at Texas Instruments, introduced the TIME 2000 students to TI’s newest graphing calculator, the TI-84, with her presentation entitled, “Using TI Graphing Calculators as a Teaching Tool in Algebra I and Geometry,” demonstrating various applications, distributing courseware, and raffling calculators and books. This exciting experience contributes to TIME 2000’s goal of developing state-of-the art secondary mathematics teachers for the 21st Century!
​TWO TIME 2000 SOPHOMORES RECEIVE AWARD

November 2004
TIME 2000 sophomores, Michael London and Paula Rosenblatt, were selected to receive the Queens College Presidential Achievers’ Award. Their outstanding accomplishment brings continued recognition and visibility to the TIME 2000 Program. Congratulations, Michael and Paula!

TIME 2000 PROFESSOR RECEIVES THE QUEENS COLLEGE PRESIDENT’S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING

At the fall Faculty Assembly, Mathematics Professor, Alan Sultan was recognized as an outstanding teacher. He was nominated by his students and colleagues, and selected by a presidential committee. He joins three other TIME 2000 professors in receiving this prestigious award—Professor Alice Artzt, Director of the TIME 2000 Program, and Mathematics Professors Martin Braun and Fern Sisser. Congratulations Professor Sultan!
​CHARACTER EDUCATION FOCUS AT MONTHLY SEMINAR

At the October seminar, Ms. Sally Glasser, Herricks Middle School, conducted an awareness workshop on “bullying.” She elicited examples of “bullying” from the TIME 2000 students, she showed several informative videotapes, and she involved the students in activities that they can use with their own students once they become teachers. TIME 2000 SENIOR RECEIVES AMTNYS AWARD

October 2004
The entire Queens College community extends congratulations to Rebecca Steiner for receiving a 2004 scholarship from the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State (AMTNYS). This is the second time in three years that a TIME 2000 senior has received this highly competitive, prestigious, statewide award, bestowed upon a graduating senior entering the mathematics teaching profession! Rebecca will receive the award at the annual conference. Congratulations, Rebecca!

TIME 2000 Professor Nominated for President-elect of NCTM

TIME 2000 Professor Frances Curcio is one of two candidates for President-elect of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The ballots, due by 1 November 2004, will be mailed out to the 110,000 members in October. Good luck to Professor Curcio!

A New Cohort of Students Joins the TIME 2000 Program

September 2004
The TIME 2000 Program continues to grow and flourish! Twenty-five freshmen and four qualifiers have become the seventh cohort of the TIME 2000 Program. They are all on the road to becoming secondary mathematics teachers. Welcome to all of them!
