TIME 2000 GRADUATE RECEIVES THE ALICE ARTZT AWARD FOR MATHEMATICS TEACHING

At the Secondary Education and Youth Services Department (SEYS) Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, 31 May, Irina Kimyagarov, member of the second TIME 2000 cohort, the undergraduate Class of 2003, received the Alice Artzt Award for Mathematics Teaching. The cash award is bestowed upon a master’s degree graduate for academic excellence, passion for teaching mathematics, and commitment to the profession.


TIME 2000 SENIORS RECEIVE GRADUATION AWARDS

On Wednesday, 31 May 2006, graduating seniors received recognition for their academic achievements. Sahil Kapoor, Louise Kato-Liu, Julio Penagos, and May Wong received FREE Foundation scholarships to continue their graduate studies at Queens College. Julio also received the Herb Fremont Award for outstanding undergraduate work in secondary mathematics education.

TIME 2000 SENIOR RECEIVES FREMONT AND FREE AWARDS

At the Secondary Education and Youth Services Department (SEYS) Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, 31 May, Julio Penagos, TIME 2000 member of the Class of 2006, received the Herb Fremont Award and a FREE scholarship. The Fremont Award is given to an outstanding senior who will enter the graduate program in secondary mathematics education following graduation from Queens College. The FREE scholarship, also awarded for academic excellence, supports graduate education at the College.

TIME 2000 FACULTY MEMBER INDUCTED INTO HIGH SCHOOL HALL OF FAME

Being recognized by her high school alma mater for distinguished service in mathematics education, Professor Frances Curcio was inducted into the New Dorp High School Hall of Fame at the 8th Annual Alumni Dinner, held at the school on Staten Island.


TIME 2000 SENIORS HONORED BY MATH DEPARTMENT

On Wednesday, 10 May, TIME 2000 senior, Louise Kato-Liu, received the Clair and Samuel Jacobs Award from the Mathematics Department, for her outstanding accomplishments in the study of mathematics. Two other seniors, Sahil Kapoor and Julio Penagos, also received honors. Congratulations!

CLASS OF 2006 READY TO GRADUATE

On Wednesday, 10 May, thirteen TIME 2000 seniors, undergraduates in the fifth TIME 2000 cohort, were honored at a graduation party in the Queens College Student Union. More than 150 family, friends, and TIME 2000 students, faculty, and staff were on hand to congratulate them, sign their collage posters, view their videotape, and enjoy their PowerPoint yearbook presentation. The seniors received awards from Dr. Alice Artzt, Director of the TIME 2000 Program, Mrs. Naomi Weinman, Program Administrator, and Ms. Ilyse Baum and Mr. Michael London, outgoing officers of the Tutoring Club, MT4.

TIME 2000 FACULTY SPEAK AT THE 8TH ANNUAL CHICAGO SYMPOSIUM SERIES

TIME 2000 Director, Alice F. Artzt, and TIME 2000 Mathematician Alan Sultan, accepted an invitation to be keynote symposium speakers for college and university educators and mathematicians at St. Xavier University, Chicago Campus. They focused on the successes of the TIME 2000 Program, and their collaboration documented in January 2005 issue of the Notices of the American Mathematical Society.
MAGIC, PARADOXES, AND PORTFOLIOS HIGHLIGHTED AT THE MONTHLY SEMINAR

During his motivational presentation entitled, “Mathemagic and Mathematical Paradoxes,” Mr. Michael Riccardo, Assistant Principal of Mathematics at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School, involved the TIME 2000 students by examining fallacies and numerical phenomena. To help undergraduates prepare for submitting their annual portfolios, selected students also shared their exemplary portfolios.

TIME 2000 DIRECTOR GOES TO WASHINGTON, DC

On Wednesday, 29 March 2006, Professor Alice F. Artzt, TIME 2000 Program Director, met with U.S. Department of Education (DOE) officials to discuss the achievements of the TIME 2000 Program. The Program will be included on the DOE’s list of Best Practices in Teacher Education. Congratulations, TIME 2000!

TIME 2000 GRADUATE SPEAKS AT ANNUAL REUNION

Mrs. Georgia (Tzortzatos) Brucculeri, member of the first TIME 2000 graduating class of 2002, and a grade 7 mathematics teacher at Herricks Middle School, made a presentation at Dr. Artzt’s annual dinner reunion. She and a colleague presented their ideas on “Improving Students’ Achievement with Writing: Vertical Teaming in Mathematics.” They will be co- presenting at LIMAÇON in March 2006, and at the annual meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, in St. Louis, in April. Congratulations to Mrs. Brucculeri!
3 TIME 2000 FACULTY RECEIVE SERVICE AWARD

On Tuesday, 6 December, Professor Alice Artzt, Director of TIME 2000, and Mathematics Professors Wallace Goldberg and Steven Kahan, were honored for their service to Queens College. Professor Artzt has been on the faculty for 20 years; Professors Goldberg and Kahan for 35 years. They are wished many more successful years at Queens College! CONGRATULATIONS!

EIGHTH GRADERS ATTEND CLASS WITH TIME 2000 FRESHMEN

6 December 2005
On Tuesday, 6 December, 34 eighth graders from the Louis Armstrong Middle School accompanied their teacher, Mrs. Merna Porter, to Queens College, where they participated in an educational psychology class with the TIME 2000 freshmen. The lesson was on attribution theory. Following the lesson, the eighth graders were guests at a pizza party thanking them for allowing the freshmen to observe them learning mathematics throughout the fall semester.

TIME 2000 FRESHMEN COMPLETE 10-WEEK FIELDWORK AT THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL (LAMS)

5 December 2005
On Monday, 5 December, the freshmen completed their required 10-week fieldwork for SEYS 221: The Psychology of Learning Mathematics, and Mrs. Porter, grade 8 mathematics teacher at LAMS, shared her insights and practices related to motivating students to learn mathematics. Details of this collaborative field work are published in the May 2005 issue of the Mathematics Teacher.

On Tuesday, 22 November, Professor James Matthews, former president of the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State and professor at Siena College, inspired the TIME 2000 students with his dynamic presentation entitled, “Raising Performance Levels and Not Just Test Scores in Our Mathematics Classes.”

On Tuesday, 13 September, new freshmen and qualifiers had the opportunity to meet their TIME 2000 peers at the first monthly seminar, designed for students to meet and get to know each other. TIME 2000 faculty members joined in the festivities.
