On Thursday, 30 May, each of the 13 undergraduates in the twelfth cohort of TIME 2000, received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a minor in secondary education. Congratulations to the Class of 2013!

​EXCELLENCE IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION AWARD BESTOWED UPON A TIME 2000 GRADUATE AND UNDERGRADUATE

The Graduate Excellence in Mathematics Education Award was bestowed upon Maria Leon-Chu, mathematics teacher at Francis Lewis High School. The Undergraduate Excellence in Mathematics Education Award was bestowed upon Farah Kamal, Yunyun Lin, Mark Tecson, and Tina Tibball. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!

SEVENTH GRADERS FROM QSI PARTICIPATE IN A TIME 2000 CLASS

13 May 2013
On Monday, 13 May 2013, 24 7th graders and their mathematics teachers, Ms. Nicole Francipane (TIME 2000 Class of 2007) and Ms. Krysten Malloy (TIME 2000 Class of 2009) from the Queens School of Inquiry (QSI), participated in the Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations of Education class with TIME 2000 sophomores and their instructor, Professor Frances Curcio. The focus of the class was on a social issue—gender equity. Following the class, everyone was treated to a pizza party to celebrate the collaboration between QSI and TIME 2000.

​CLASS OF 2013 READY TO GRADUATE

On Wednesday, 8 May, 13 TIME 2000 seniors, undergraduates in the twelfth TIME 2000 cohort, were honored at a graduation party in the Student Union at Queens College. More than 150 family, friends, and TIME 2000 students, faculty, and staff were on hand to congratulate them, after viewing their e-Yearbook. The seniors received awards from Dr. Alice Artzt, Director of the TIME 2000 Program, Mrs. Naomi Weinman, Program Administrator, and from officers of the Tutoring Club, MT4.

​TIME 2000 SOPHOMORES VISIT THE VOORLEZER’S HOUSE

On Friday, 3 May, the TIME 2000 sophomores enrolled in SEYS 201W: Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations in Education, visited Historic Richmond Town in Staten Island, with Professor Frances Curcio, to visit the oldest original school house in the United States, The Voorlezer’s House (c. 1695).

On Wednesday evening, 1 May, nine of the TIME 2000 students and one TIME 2000 graduate joined Queens College faculty and staff attending the Queens College Gala at Gotham Hall in Manhattan. A wonderful time was had by all!
​TIME 2000 GRADUATE TO TEACH IN VIETNAM

April 2013
TIME 2000 Graduate, Mr. Seth Reisner, Undergraduate Class of 2009, Graduate Class of 2013, has been offered and has accepted a teaching position with the Schools of North America in Vietnam where he will be teaching high school mathematics for two years. CONGRATULATIONS, SETH!
​SHARING EXCITING SESSIONS ATTENDED AT LIMAÇON

At the April seminar, TIME 2000 undergraduates, Nikolina, Nerline, and Darnell shared lessons learned at LIMAÇON, a mathematics education conference held at SUNY Old Westbury, on 15 March 2013, attended by the TIME 2000 students. Prior to the seminar, students shared examples their portfolios.

DR. ROBERT GERVER SHARES IDEAS FOR NEW MATHEMATICS PATHWAYS

On Tuesday, 12 March 2013, Dr. Robert Gerver, Queens College alumnus, Classes of 1976 and 1980, teacher of mathematics for 36 years at North Shore High School, and highly acclaimed author of innovative mathematics text materials, was a guest at the monthly seminar. He made a presentation entitled, “New Pathways for Students Needing Four Years of Mathematics,” highlighting his recently published book, Financial Algebra. The undergraduates were impressed with ways to build financial literacy through advanced algebra, and grateful to receive a copy of the book.

TIME 2000 GRADUATES RETURN TO SHARE THEIR TEACHING EXPERIENCES

Thirteen TIME 2000 graduates from the classes of 2002 through 2012, were guests at the monthly seminar held during the winter recess to accommodate their full-time teaching schedules. The graduates were members of a panel, describing their teaching experiences. Just as successful as the panels on 21 February 2012, 22 February 2011, 16 February 2010, 17 February 2009, 19 February 2008, 20 February 2007, 21 February 2006, 22 February 2005, 17 February 2004, and 4 March 2003 (see Past Events), everyone’s so impressed with the graduates that they will definitely be invited back next year along with members of the class of 2013!

EIGHTH GRADERS ATTEND CLASS WITH TIME 2000 FRESHMEN

4 December 2012
On Tuesday, 4 December, 31 eighth graders from the Louis Armstrong Middle School accompanied their teacher, Ms. Merna Porter, to Queens College, where they participated in an educational psychology class with 26 TIME 2000 freshmen. The lesson, conducted by TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt, was on attribution theory. Following the lesson, the eighth graders were guests at a pizza party, thanking them for allowing the freshmen to observe them learning mathematics throughout the fall semester.

TIME 2000 FRESHMEN COMPLETE 10- WEEK FIELD WORK AT THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL (LAMS)

On Monday, 3 December, the freshmen completed their required 10-week field work for SEYS 221: The Psychology of Learning Mathematics. Ms. Merna Porter, grade 8 mathematics teacher at LAMS, shared her insights and practices related to motivating students to learn mathematics.

On Wednesday, 15 November 2012, three TIME 2000 sophomores were recognized for their outstanding academic achievement during their freshman year by Queens College President James Muyskens at the Presidential Achievers Honor Roll Awards Ceremony: Kristin Tucker, Ariele Eager-Leavitt, and Nikolina Dabovic. CONGRATULATIONS!

TIME 2000 WINNERS OF THE PHOTO CONTEST

In preparation for the annual TIME 2000 Conference on Celebrating Mathematics Teaching, with keynote speaker Dan Meyer, the TIME 2000 Program hosted a photo contest. The winners were announced at the monthly seminar. The photo with the greatest number of questions was TIME 2000 Freshman, Crystal Purpura’s Ferris Wheel. All of the winners will have the opportunity to meet Dan Meyer. Congratulations to all the winners.

MAX RAY ENCOURAGES TIME 2000 STUDENTS TO “TWEET”

At the monthly seminar, Mr. Max Ray, Math Forum at Drexel University, gave a presentation entitled, ‘I Tweet therefore I am,” on how mathematics teachers use Twitter for professional development and networking. His examples and advice were motivational.

​MARIANNE MANCUSI, GUEST SPEAKER AT MONTHLY SEMINAR

Ms. Marianne Mancusi, retired teacher from South Side Middle School, Rockville Centre, made a presentation entitled, “Formative Assessments: Examples Used for Math,” at the monthly seminar. T2k participants were actively involved in activities that could be used to differentiate mathematics instruction as well as provide formative assessment.

Rachel Wessel, TIME 2000 senior and member of the 12th cohort, has had the opportunity to be part of the Queens College social blog, "QC Voices." At least once per week she posts a blog about mathematics teaching. Readers are invited to check it out and add comments, critiques, and ideas regarding what should happen next! Thanks to Rachel for keeping mathematics education in the public forum.


A WARM WELCOME TO NEW AND RETURNING TIME 2000 STUDENTS

11 September 2012
On Tuesday, 11 September, new freshmen and qualifiers had the opportunity to meet their TIME 2000 peers at the first monthly seminar of the 2012-2013 academic year. The seminar was designed for students to meet and to get to know each other. Several TIME 2000 faculty members were also present to join in the festivities.
