​TIME 2000 STUDENTS PLAN, HOST, AND PARTICIPATE IN THE SECOND ANNUAL FIELD DAY

On Wednesday, 11 June, 30 TIME 2000 undergraduates and some graduates participated in the second annual field day. There was plenty of enthusiasm, energy, and excitement during each activity. The event was such a big hit, plans are already being made for the Third Annual Field Day in 2015!

CLASS OF 2014 READY TO GRADUATE

On Wednesday, 14 May, 14 TIME 2000 seniors, undergraduates in the thirteenth TIME 2000 cohort, were honored at a graduation party in the Patio Room at Queens College. More than 150 family, friends, and TIME 2000 students, faculty, and staff were on hand to congratulate them, after viewing their e-Yearbook. The seniors received awards from Dr. Alice Artzt, Director of the TIME 2000 Program, Mrs. Naomi Weinman, Program Administrator, and from officers of the Tutoring Club, MT4.

NINTH GRADERS FROM EAST-WEST SCHOOL OF INTERNTIONAL STUDIES PARTICIPATE IN A TIME 2000 CLASS

12 May 2014
On Monday, 12 May 2014, twenty 9th graders and their mathematics teacher, Ms. Mara Markinson (TIME 2000 Class of 2012), participated in the Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations of Education class with TIME 2000 sophomores and their instructor, Professor Frances Curcio. The focus of the class was on a social issue—gender equity. Following the class, everyone was treated to a pizza party to celebrate the collaboration between East-West and TIME 2000.

On Tuesday evening, 6 May, twelve of the TIME 2000 undergraduates joined Queens College faculty and staff attending the Queens College Gala at Gotham Hall in Manhattan. A wonderful time was had by all!

​TIME 2000 SOPHOMORES VISIT THE VOORLEZER’S HOUSE

2 May 2014
On Friday, 2 May, the TIME 2000 sophomores enrolled in SEYS 201W: Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations in Education, visited Historic Richmond Town in Staten Island, with Professor Frances Curcio, to visit the oldest original school house in the United States, The Voorlezer’s House (c. 1695).

TIME 2000 UNDERGRADS EXPLORE FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

18 March 2014
At the monthly seminar, Mr. David Wees, New Visions for Public Schools, introduced the TIME 2000 students to “Formative Assessment in a Common Core Classroom.” He engaged the undergrads in an assessment activity, discussed their solutions, and then provided samples of students’ work for analysis and follow-up instruction. The TIME 2000 undergrads are building a foundation for designing instruction based on students’ levels of understanding.

TIME 2000 GRADUATES RETURN TO SHARE THEIR TEACHING EXPERIENCES

Nineteen TIME 2000 graduates from the classes of 2002 through 2013, were guests at the monthly seminar held during the winter recess to accommodate their full-time teaching schedules. The graduates were members of a panel, describing their teaching experiences. Just as successful as the panels on 19 February 2013, 21 February 2012, 22 February 2011, 16 February 2010, 17 February 2009, 19 February 2008, 20 February 2007, 21 February 2006, 22 February 2005, 17 February 2004, and 4 March 2003 (see Past Events), everyone’s so impressed with the graduates that they will definitely be invited back next year along with members of the class of 2014!

CELEBRATING CURRENT AND FUTURE MATHEMATICS TEACHERS

22 January 2014
The weather did not interrupt the enthusiasm for attending Dr. Artzt’s annual reunion, recognizing dedicated mathematics educators who make a difference in the lives of their students and future teachers. TIME 2000 Senior Nicole Turato described the outstanding qualities of her former high school mathematics teacher, Ms. Edna Messina, at H. Frank Carey High School. TIME 2000 graduate, Ms. Ana Mojocoa, spoke about her former cooperating teacher, Mrs. Janet Cerulli, Mathematics Department Chair, Sewanhaka High School, recipient of the Mary Felicetti Memorial Award. Mr. Michael Riccardo, one of Dr. Artzt’s first students, mesmerized the attendees with his mathematical magic tricks.

At the December seminar, four seniors, Nerline Hyppolite, Alyssa Khan, Andrea Kim, and Darnell McCallum shared lessons they created in their methods course. They demonstrated how well prepared they are to begin student teaching in spring 2014!

EIGHTH GRADERS ATTEND CLASS WITH TIME 2000 FRESHMEN

10 December 2013
On Tuesday, 10 December, 30 eighth graders from the Louis Armstrong Middle School accompanied their teacher, Ms. Merna Porter, to Queens College, where they participated in an educational psychology class with 29 TIME 2000 freshmen. The lesson, conducted by TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt, was on attribution theory. Following the lesson, the eighth graders were guests at a pizza party, thanking them for allowing the freshmen to observe them learning mathematics throughout the fall semester.

TIME 2000 FRESHMEN COMPLETE 10- WEEK FIELD WORK AT THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL (LAMS)

On Monday, 9 December, the freshmen completed their required 10-week field work for SEYS 221: The Psychology of Learning Mathematics. Ms. Merna Porter, grade 8 mathematics teacher at LAMS, shared her insights and practices related to motivating students to learn mathematics.

​TIME 2000 JUNIORS PARTICIPATE IN PYTHAGORIZING THE FLATIRON BUILDING

5 December 2013
On Thursday, 5 December 13 (a Pythagorean triple: 5, 12, 13), three TIME 2000 juniors, Arielle Eager-Leavitt, Nicole McDonald, and Christina Nardella, joined over 500 hundred other mathematics enthusiasts in analyzing the Flatiron Building in Manhattan, proving that its façade exemplifies the Pythagorean Theorem. The event was sponsored by the Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) celebrating its first anniversary.
​THE ART OF DEBATING WAS SUBJECT OF MONTHLY SEMINAR

Mr. Chris Luzniak, a Math for America Master Teacher, on the faculty of the Urban Assembly School for Law and Justice, convinced the TIME 2000 students of the importance of in his presentation, “Debate That! Argumentation and Reasoning in the Math Classroom.”

​FIRST TIME 2000 PORTFOLIO FAIR

On Wednesday, 13 November, TIME 2000 Junior, Shazena Khan organized the first portfolio fair. TIME 2000 students had the chance to review and discuss exemplary portfolios to help them prepare their own required portfolios due at the end of the spring 2014 semester. Great job, Shazena!

​THREE TIME 2000 STUDENTS RECEIVE PRESIDENTIAL HONORS

On Wednesday, 13 November 2013, three TIME 2000 students were recognized for their outstanding academic achievement by Queens College President James Muyskens at the Presidential Achievers Honor Roll Awards Ceremony: Marche Mason, Lu Li, and Nancy Strbik. CONGRATULATIONS!
​SEMINAR GUEST SPEAKER HIGHLIGHTS DIFFERENTIATING INSTRUCTION

On Tuesday, 8 October, the focus of the monthly seminar was “Differentiation: How You Can Make a Difference!” The guest speaker was Ms. Pamela Rakeman, former mathematics department facilitator and teacher at South Side High School, and presently adjunct professor at Nassau Community College. TIME 2000 students experienced activities designed to meet the needs of different learners, and they are ready to make a difference for all learners of mathematics!

TIME 2000 DIRECTOR INDUCTED INTO THE NYSAMS HALL OF FAME

27 September 2013
On Friday, 27 September, TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt, was one of three outstanding mathematics educators inducted into the New York State Mathematics Educators’ Hall of Fame, at the Tarrytown Doubletree. The award was bestowed by the New York State Association of Mathematics Supervisors. Many of Dr. Artzt’s family, friends, colleagues, former students, and current students participated in the festivities. CONGRATULATIONS, DR. ARTZT!

A WARM WELCOME TO NEW AND RETURNING TIME 2000 STUDENTS

On Tuesday, 10 September, 28 new freshmen and qualifiers had the opportunity to meet their TIME 2000 peers at the first monthly seminar of the 2013-2014 academic year. The seminar was designed for students to meet and to get to know each other. Several TIME 2000 faculty members were also present to join in the festivities.
