TIME 2000 STUDENTS PLAN, HOST, AND PARTICIPATE IN THE THIRD ANNUAL FIELD DAY

On Thursday, 4 June, 40 TIME 2000 undergraduates participated in the Third Annual Field Day. There was plenty of enthusiasm, energy, and excitement during each activity. The event was such a big hit, plans are already being made for the Fourth Annual Field Day in 2015!

CELEBRATING CURRENT AND FUTURE MATHEMATICS TEACHERS

3 June 2015
Inclement weather caused the cancellation of Dr. Artzt’s January reunion, but the weather was perfect on 3 June, when the reunion, recognizing dedicated mathematics educators who make a difference in the lives of their students and future teachers, was rescheduled.. TIME 2000 graduate, Nikolina Dabovic, Class of 2015, described the outstanding qualities of her former grade 7 mathematics teacher, Mr. Adam Zaid, at IS 77, Ridgewood, Queens. TIME 2000 graduate, Mrs. Kendal Askins, Undergraduate Class of 2007, Graduate Class of 2012 spoke about her former cooperating teacher, Ms. Merna Porter, grade 8 mathematics teacher at the Louis Armstrong Middle School, East Elmhurst, Queens, recipient of the Mary Felicetti Memorial Award. Ms. Catherine Lusardi, one of Dr. Artzt’s former students, gave a presentation on “flipping” a mathematics lesson.

CLASS OF 2015 READY TO GRADUATE

On Wednesday, 13 May, 15 TIME 2000 seniors, undergraduates in the fourteenth TIME 2000 cohort, were honored at a graduation party in the Student Union at Queens College. More than 175 family, friends, and TIME 2000 students, faculty, and staff were on hand to congratulate them, after viewing their e-Yearbook. The seniors received awards from Dr. Alice Artzt, Director of the TIME 2000 Program, Mrs. Naomi Weinman, Program Administrator, and from officers of the Tutoring Club, MT4.

SEVENTH GRADERS FROM THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOLPARTICIPATE IN A TIME 2000 CLASS

On Monday, 11 May 2015, 30 7th graders and their mathematics teachers, Ms. Dia Mouzouris from The Louis Armstrong Middle School (LAMS), participated in the Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations of Education class with TIME 2000 sophomores and their instructor, Professor Frances Curcio. The focus of the class was on a social issue—gender equity. Following the class, everyone was treated to a pizza party to celebrate the collaboration between LAMS and TIME 2000.

On Tuesday evening, 5 May, eleven of the TIME 2000 undergraduates and two graduates joined Queens College faculty and staff in attending the Queens College Gala at Gotham Hall in Manhattan. A wonderful time was had by all!

TIME 2000 SOPHOMORES VISIT THE VOORLEZER’S HOUSE

On Friday, 1 May, the TIME 2000 sophomores enrolled in SEYS 201W: Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations in Education, visited Historic Richmond Town in Staten Island, with Professor Frances Curcio, to visit the oldest original school house in the United States, The Voorlezer’s House (c. 1695).

TIME 2000 SOPHOMORES CELEBRATE RENÉ DESCARTES’ 419TH BIRTHDAY WITH 7TH GRADERS AT THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL

On Tuesday, 31 March 2015, the TIME 2000 sophomores celebrated René Descartes’ 419th birthday with Ms. Mouzouris’s 7th graders at the Louis Armstrong Middle School (LAMS). Each Tuesday morning, the sophomores report to LAMS to fulfill their field work requirement for SEYS 201W: Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations in Education. Special cupcakes topped with an image of the Cartesian plane were enjoyed by all.

PROFESSOR JOHN HORTON CONWAY, DISTINGUISHED MATHEMATICIAN, DISCUSSES CALENDAR CALISTHENICS

At the monthly seminar, Professor John Horton Conway, Gorenstein Professor, Queens College, von Neumann Distinguished Professor (Emeritus), Princeton University, the first recipient of the Pólya Prize in 1987, and creator of the Doomsday Algorithm to determine specific days of the week in a given month and a given year, discussed the algorithm with the TIME 2000 students. Everyone was extremely honored to have the opportunity to meet and to listen to a famous mathematician!

EIGHTH GRADERS ATTEND CLASS WITH TIME 2000 FRESHMEN

9 December 2014
On Tuesday, 9 December, 30 eighth graders from the Louis Armstrong Middle School accompanied their teacher, Ms. Merna Porter, to Queens College, where they participated in an educational psychology class with 29 TIME 2000 freshmen. The lesson, conducted by TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt, was on attribution theory. Following the lesson, the eighth graders were guests at a pizza party, thanking them for allowing the freshmen to observe them learning mathematics throughout the fall semester.

On Monday, 8 December, the freshmen completed their required 10-week field work for SEYS 221: The Psychology of Learning Mathematics. Ms. Merna Porter, grade 8 mathematics teacher at LAMS, shared her insights and practices related to motivating students to learn mathematics.

On Tuesday, 7 October, the focus of the monthly seminar was “Problem Solving/Project-based Teachers in High Demand.” The guest speaker was Ms. Leigh Ann Sudol-DeLyser, from the New York City Foundation for Computer Science Education. TIME 2000 students were informed of ways to supplement and expand their mathematics teaching skills and marketability by studying computer science.

​TIME 2000 FRESHMEN BEGIN FIELD WORK AT THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL

On Monday, 29 September, the TIME 2000 freshmen and new students began their 10-week field experience at the Louis Armstrong Middle School, East Elmhurst, NY. The freshmen will observe Mrs. Merna Porter teach one of her grade 8 mathematics classes, and participate in prelesson and postlesson discussions with Mrs. Porter and Dr. Frances Curcio, Queens College supervisor. The field work fulfills a New York State certification requirement in conjunction with SEYS 221: The Psychology of Learning, taught by TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt.
A WARM WELCOME TO NEW AND RETURNING TIME 2000 STUDENTS

9 September 2014
On Tuesday, 9 September, new freshmen and qualifiers had the opportunity to meet their TIME 2000 peers at the first monthly seminar of the 2014-2015 academic year. The seminar was designed for students to meet and to get to know each other. Several TIME 2000 faculty members were also present to join in the festivities.
