TIME 2000 CLASS OF 2006, MS. OMEGA, AND MR. ALBANEZE HONORED AT DR. ARTZT’S REUNION

Dr. Artzt’s annual reunion attracted more than 150 former and current students. The fifth TIME 2000 cohort, the Class of 2006, was honored on the 10th anniversary of their graduation. Of the 13 original graduates, 10 were present, with one, Mr. Sahil Kapoor, traveling from Canada. Also honored were Ms. Sylvia Omega, Class of 2006, mathematics teacher at the Queens School of Inquiry, nominated by Ms. Theresa Simorella, TIME 2000 Class of 2015, and Ms. Sabrina Joseph, TIME 2000 Class of 2010, for her role as an outstanding cooperating teacher. Mr. Frank Albaneze, mathematics teacher at Christ the King High School, was recognized for inspiring one of his students, Angelina Ezratty, Class of 2017, to become a mathematics teacher. A special presentation about Google Apps was delivered by Ms. Kendal Askins, TIME 2000 Undergraduate Class of 2007, and Graduate Class of 2012, mathematics teacher at East Strasburg Middle School, PA. A great time was had by all!

On Tuesday, 7 June, 27 TIME 2000 undergraduates and 6 recently graduated TIME 2000 seniors participated in the Fourth Annual Field Day. There was plenty of enthusiasm, energy, and excitement during each activity. The event was such a big hit, plans are already being made for the Fifth Annual Field Day in 2016!

TIME 2000 SENIOR RECEIVES THE HERB FREMONT AWARD

At the Secondary Education and Youth Services Awards Ceremony, Lu Li received the Herb Fremont Award. The Fremont Award is given to an outstanding senior who will enter the Graduate Program in Secondary Mathematics Education following graduation from Queens College. Congratulations, Lu!

On Monday, 16 May, 11 TIME 2000 seniors, undergraduates in the fifteenth TIME 2000 cohort, were honored at a graduation party in the Patio Room at Queens College. More than 125 family, friends, and TIME 2000 students, faculty, and staff were on hand to congratulate them, after viewing their e-Yearbook. The seniors received awards from Dr. Alice Artzt, Director of the TIME 2000 Program, Mrs. Naomi Weinman, Program Administrator, and from officers of the Tutoring Club, MT4.

SEVENTH  GRADERS FROM THE QUEENS SCHOOL OF INQUIRY PARTICIPATE IN A TIME 2000 CLASS

On Monday, 16 May 2016, 26 7th graders and their mathematics teachers, Ms. Nicole Francipane and Ms. Krysten Malloy, from the Queens School of Inquiry (QSI), participated in the Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations of Education class with TIME 2000 sophomores and their instructor, Professor Frances Curcio. The focus of the class was on a social issue—gender equity. Following the class, everyone was treated to a pizza party to celebrate the collaboration between QSI and TIME 2000.

On Monday, 16 May, TIME 2000 Juniors, Angelina Ezratty and Victor Liu, were elected into New York Alpha Chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the National Honorary Mathematics Society. Congratulations to them for their superior achievement in mathematics!

TIME 2000 SOPHOMORES COMLETE 10-WEEK FIELD WORK AT THE QUEENS SCHOOL OF INQUIRY

During the spring 2016 semester, the TIME 2000 sophomores enrolled in SEYS 201W: Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations of Education, fulfilled their required field work at the Queens School of Inquiry (QSI), observing TIME 2000 graduates, Ms. Nicole Francipane, and Ms. Krysten Malloy, in a collaborative team-teaching grade 7 mathematics classroom. In addition to meeting with the teachers after each lesson, they also met with the principal, the assistant principal, and the parent coordinator, to get a comprehensive, holistic perspective of middle level education.

On Friday, 6 May, the TIME 2000 sophomores enrolled in SEYS 201W: Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations in Education, visited Historic Richmond Town in Staten Island, with Professor Frances Curcio, to visit the oldest original school house in the North America, The Voorlezer’s House (c. 1695).

MATHEMATICS MEETS ART AT THE MONTHLY SEMINAR

Mathematics and art was the theme of the monthly seminar, “Section d’Or, One Story of What Happens when Math Meets Art,” conducted by Adjunct Professor Richard Diaz. The TIME 2000 students were enthusiastically involved in creating their own artistic designs as they analyzed the embedded mathematics.

TIME 2000 GRADUATES RETURN TO SHARE THEIR TEACHING EXPERIENCES

Twenty-nine TIME 2000 graduates from the classes of 2002 through 2015, were guests at the monthly seminar held during the winter recess to accommodate their full-time teaching schedules. Most of the graduates were members of several panels, describing their teaching experiences. Just as successful as the panels on 17 February 2015, 18 February 2014, 19 February 2013, 21 February 2012, 22 February 2011, 16 February 2010, 17 February 2009, 19 February 2008, 20 February 2007, 21 February 2006, 22 February 2005, 17 February 2004, and 4 March 2003 (see Past Events), everyone’s so impressed with the graduates that they will definitely be invited back next year along with members of the class of 2016!

EIGHTH GRADERS ATTEND CLASS WITH TIME 2000 FRESHMEN
On Thursday, 10 December, 30 eighth graders from the Louis Armstrong Middle School accompanied their teacher, Ms. Merna Porter, to Queens College, where they participated in an educational psychology class with 23 TIME 2000 freshmen. The lesson, conducted by TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt, was on attribution theory. Following the lesson, the eighth graders were guests at a pizza party, thanking them for allowing the freshmen to observe them learning mathematics throughout the fall semester.

On Monday, 7 December, the TIME 2000 freshmen completed their required 10-week field work for SEYS 221: The Psychology of Learning Mathematics. Ms. Merna Porter, grade 8 mathematics teacher at LAMS, shared her insights and practices related to motivating students to learn mathematics.

THREE TIME 2000 STUDENTS ARE PRESIDENTIAL ACHIEVERS

On Wednesday evening, 4 November, three TIME 2000 sophomores, Antoinette Koskinas, Sam John, and Jessica Hannon, were honored for having completed their freshman year at Queens College with outstanding academic credentials, earning a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher. They are on the Presidential Achievers’ Honor Roll. Congratulations!

PROBLEM-SOLVING STRATEGIES HIGHLIGHTED AT THE OCTOBER SEMINAR

On Tuesday, 6 October, problem solving was the focus of the monthly seminar. The guest speaker was Ms. Mary Ann Mansfield, co-chair of the Working Group of the National Museum of Mathematics and a member of its Advisory Council. The TIME 2000 students experienced solving and discussing nontraditional problems as Ms. Mansfield modeled the mathematical practices of the Common Core at her session entitled, “Strategies for Problem Solving + Mathematical Practices = Building Better Thinkers.”

​TIME 2000 FACULTY MEMBER INDUCTED INTO THE NYSAMS HALL OF FAME

On Friday, 25 September, Professor Frances R. Curcio was one of five outstanding mathematics educators inducted into the New York State Mathematics Educators’ Hall of Fame at the Desmond Hotel in Albany. The award was bestowed by the New York State Association of Mathematics Supervisors. Many of Dr. Curcio’s family, friends, and colleagues participated in the festivities. Dr. Curcio proudly joins TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt, recipient of the Hall of Fame honor in 2013. CONGRATULATIONS, DR.

TIME 2000 GRADUATE TEACHING IN JAPAN

September 2015

TIME 2000 graduate, Mr. Seth Reisner, Undergraduate Class of 2009, Graduate Class of 2013, has accepted a mathematics teaching position in grades 6-8, at Tokyo International School, located in Minami Azabu, Minato-Ku, Tokyo. He also runs the Soccer club for students in grades 3-5. Prior to this appointment, Seth taught high school mathematics at the Schools of North America in Vietnam for two years. CONGRATULATIONS, SETH!

On Friday, 25 September, Professor Frances Curcio will go to Albany to be formally inducted into the NYS Mathematics Educators’ Hall of Fame, for her international, national, and local contributions to the field. She is honored to join 2013 Hall of Fame inductee, Professor Alice Artzt, Director of TIME 2000. Congratulations Professor Curcio!

The TIME 2000 Newsletter, Reflections of TIME, has three new editors: TIME 2000 Juniors, Racheal, Zean, and Angelina. They will work closely with Mrs. Weinman to prepare the 2015-2016 issues of the newsletter. Good luck to them as they take on this very important role!
