TIME 2000 GRADUATE SELECTED AS DIVISIONAL STUDENT SPEAKER

Ms. Rocío Saborido, mathematics teacher at Oceanside High School, and member of the TIME 2000 Class of 2003, was selected as Divisional Student Speaker for the Ceremony of Recognition, held on campus at the Colden Center. She received a Master of Science degree in Adolescent Mathematics Education.

TIME 2000 SENIOR RECEIVES THE HERB FREMONT AWARD

At the Secondary Education and Youth Services Awards Ceremony, Ms. Nicole Francipane received the Herb Fremont Award. The Fremont Award is given to an outstanding senior who will enter the graduate program in secondary mathematics education following graduation from Queens College. Congratulations, Nicole!

TIME 2000 GRADUATE RECEIVES THE ALICE ARTZT AWARD FOR MATHEMATICS TEACHING

At the Secondary Education and Youth Services Department (SEYS) Awards Ceremony, Ms. Rocío Saborido, member of the TIME 2000 Class of 2003, received one of the two Alice Artzt Awards for Mathematics Teaching. The cash award is bestowed upon a master's degree graduate for academic excellence, passion for teaching mathematics, and commitment to the profession. Congratulations, Rocío!

BIG BUDDY AWARD BESTOWED UPON TIME 2000 SENIOR

Mr. Deepak S. Joseph was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the Big Buddy Program by being given the Mercedes L. Harris Memorial Award at the Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education (EECE)’s Awards Ceremony.

TIME 2000 SENIORS HONORED BY MATH DEPARTMENT

At the Mathematics Department’s Awards Ceremony, TIME 2000 Senior, Paula Rosenblatt, received the Clair and Samuel Jacobs Award, for her outstanding accomplishments in the study of mathematics. Two other seniors, Sabrina Anderson and Michael London, also received honors. Congratulations!


NEW NEWSLETTER CO-EDITORS ANNOUNCED

Ferrin Mohammed-Bujan and Alexandria Kubic will assume the responsibility of co-editing the TIME 2000 Newsletter, Reflections of TIME, beginning with Volume 6, Number 1, during the 2007-2008 academic year. Good luck to Alexandria and Ferrin!
​CLASS OF 2007 READY TO GRADUATE

9 May 2007
On Wednesday, 9 May, fourteen TIME 2000 seniors, undergraduates in the sixth TIME 2000 cohort, were honored at a graduation party in the Queens College Student Union. More than 150 family, friends, and TIME 2000 students, faculty, and staff were on hand to congratulate them, view their videotape, and enjoy their PowerPoint yearbook presentation. The seniors received awards from Dr. Alice Artzt, Director of the TIME 2000 Program, Mrs. Naomi Weinman, Program Administrator, and from officers of the Tutoring Club, MT4.

At the April seminar, the new officers of Today’s Tutors, Tomorrow’s Math Teachers, MT4, were elected. Sarah, Jackie, MiRim, and Nicole will lead the club through 2008.
SHARING EXCITING SESSIONS ATTENDED AT LIMAÇON

At the March seminar, TIME 2000 undergraduates Andrew, Jessica, Reanna, Kasey, Xuilden, Beata, Yady, and Alexandria shared lessons learned at LIMAÇON, a mathematics education conference at SUNY Old Westbury, attended by TIME 2000 students on Friday, 16 March.

​TIME 2000 GRADUATES RETURN TO SHARE THEIR TEACHING EXPERIENCES

Fifteen TIME 2000 graduates from the classes of 2002 through 2006, were guests at the monthly seminar held during the winter recess to accommodate their full-time teaching schedules. The graduates were members of a panel, entertaining questions from the undergraduates about their teaching experiences. Just as successful as the panels on 21 February 2006, 22 February 2005, 17 February 2004, and 4 March 2003 (see Past Events below), everyone was so impressed with the graduates that they will definitely be invited back next year along with members of the Class of 2007!

​TIME 2000 STUDENTS VISIT EXHIBITS AT THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

Experiencing mathematics in art, twenty TIME 2000 students visited MoMA and viewed paintings by Braque, Cézanne, Mondrian, and Picasso, among others, affirming the fact that mathematics is everywhere!
EIGHTH GRADERS ATTEND CLASS WITH TIME 2000 FRESHMEN

7 December 2006
On Thursday, 7 December, 32 eighth graders from the Louis Armstrong Middle School accompanied their teacher, Mrs. Merna Porter, to Queens College, where they participated in an educational psychology class with the TIME 2000 freshmen. The lesson was on attribution theory. Following the lesson, the eighth graders were guests at a pizza party thanking them for allowing the freshmen to observe them learning mathematics throughout the fall semester.

THREE NEW TUTORING CLUB OFFICERS

5 December 2006
At a special election at the monthly seminar, Jacqueline West, Sarah Hoffer, and Mi Rim Kang, were elected, as vice president, president, and secretary, respectively, joining Xuilden Payano as Treasurer, of Today’s Tutors, Tomorrow’s Math Teachers, an official Queens College club.
TIME 2000 SENIORS SHARE EXCITING MATHEMATICS ACTIVITIES

5 December 2006
At the December seminar, five TIME 2000 seniors, Lysaundra, Samantha, Deepak, Sabrina, and Vicky, were invited to share the lessons they created for assignments in their education courses. They demonstrated that they are well prepared to begin student teaching in spring 2007.

TIME 2000 FRESHMEN COMPLETE 10-WEEK FIELDWORK AT THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL (LAMS)

4 December 2006
On Monday, 4 December, the freshmen completed their required 10-week fieldwork for SEYS 221: The Psychology of Learning Mathematics, and Mrs. Porter, grade 8 mathematics teacher at LAMS, shared her insights and practices related to motivating students to learn mathematics. Details of this collaborative field work were published in the May 2005 issue of the Mathematics Teacher.

ART AND THE GRAPHING CALCULATOR

At the monthly seminar, New Hyde Park Memorial High School mathematics teachers, Ms. Donna Martin and Ms. Barbara Mavro, demonstrated the versatility of the graphing calculator. The title of their presentation was, "Graphing Art Project: Functional Art."

​A WARM WELCOME TO NEW AND RETURNING TIME 2000 STUDENTS

On Tuesday, 12 September, new freshmen and qualifiers had the opportunity to meet their TIME 2000 peers at the first monthly seminar of the 2006-07 academic year. The seminar was designed for students to meet and to get to know each other. Several TIME 2000 faculty members were also present to join in the festivities.
