At the graduation ceremony on Thursday, 29 May, Professor Alice Artzt and her husband, Russell Artzt, Class of 1968, were awarded the Presidential Medal for their untiring efforts in supporting the mission of Queens College.

At the Secondary Education and Youth Services Department (SEYS) Awards Ceremony, Ms. Maryann Sedera, member of the TIME 2000 Class of 2004, received the 2008 Alice Artzt Award for Mathematics Teaching. The cash award is bestowed upon a master’s degree graduate for academic excellence, passion for teaching mathematics, and commitment to the profession. Congratulations, Maryann! /p>

Two TIME 2000 seniors, Carolina Galvis and Kasey Luchan, were inducted into Kappa Gamma Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi International, an honor society in education. Congratulations Carolina and Kasey for your fine academic achievements! Dr. Alice Artzt, Director of TIME 2000 delivered the keynote address at the initiation ceremony, held in the Student Union Building at Queens College.

CLASS OF 2008 READY TO GRADUATE

On Wednesday, 7 May, thirteen TIME 2000 seniors, undergraduates in the seventh TIME 2000 cohort, were honored at a graduation party in the Queens College Student Union. More than 175 family, friends, and TIME 2000 students, faculty, and staff were on hand to congratulate them, after viewing their PowerPoint yearbook presentation. The seniors gave awards to faculty and staff, and then, they received awards from Dr. Alice Artzt, Director of the TIME 2000 Program, Mrs. Naomi Weinman, Program Administrator, and from officers of the Tutoring Club, MT4.

TIME 2000 senior, Randall S. Clarke, received the 2008 CUNY Student Leadership Award presented by the CUNY Leadership Academy. He also received the Queens College Award for Gender, Race, and Culture. Congratulations, Randall!

MARCH SEMINAR FOCUSES ON THE ALGEBRAIC THINKER

Mr. Eric O’Brien, mathematics teacher in the Bellmore Schools, on Long Island, was the guest presenter at the March seminar. The TIME 2000 students had the opportunity to participate in exciting activities at his session entitled, “Cultivating the Algebraic Thinker.”

​TIME 2000 GRADUATES RETURN TO SHARE THEIR TEACHING EXPERIENCES

Thirteen TIME 2000 graduates from the classes of 2002 through 2007, were guests at the monthly seminar held during the winter recess to accommodate their full-time teaching schedules. The graduates were members of a panel, entertaining questions from the undergraduates about their teaching experiences. Just as successful as the panels on 20 February 2007, 21 February 2006, 22 February 2005, 17 February 2004, and 4 March 2003 (see Past Events below), everyone's so impressed with the graduates that they will definitely be invited back next year along with members of the Class of 2008!

At Dr. Artzt's annual dinner reunion on Thursday, 17 January 2008, Mr. John Chae, TIME 2000 graduate from the Class of 2002, and mathematics teacher at Baldwin High School, Baldwin, NY, was honored for influencing one of his students to become a mathematics teacher. Mr. Chae received an award from TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt. Congratulations to this exemplary mathematics educator!

At the December seminar, five seniors, John, Reanna, Carolina, Kasey, and Jessica, shared the lessons they created for assignments in their education courses. They demonstrated how well prepared they are to begin student teaching in spring 2008.
EIGHTH GRADERS ATTEND CLASS WITH TIME 2000 FRESHMEN

6 December 2007
On Thursday, 6 December, 30 eighth graders from the Louis Armstrong Middle School accompanied their teacher, Mrs. Merna Porter, to Queens College, where they participated in an educational psychology class with TIME 2000 freshmen. The lesson was on attribution theory. Following the lesson, the eighth graders were guests at a pizza party thanking them for allowing the freshmen to observe them learning mathematics throughout the fall semester.

TIME 2000 FRESHMEN COMPLETE 10-WEEK FIELD WORK AT THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL (LAMS)

On Monday, 3 December, the freshmen completed their required 10-week field work for SEYS 221: The Psychology of Learning Mathematics. Mrs. Merna Porter, grade 8 mathematics teacher at LAMS, shared her insights and practices related to motivating students to learn mathematics. Details of this collaborative field work were published in the May 2005 issue of the Mathematics Teacher.

MRS. LARISA BUKALOV SHARES HER ENTHUSIASM FOR TEACHING HIGH SCHOOL MATHEMATICS RESEARCH

At the monthly seminar, Mrs. Larisa Bukalov, mathematics teacher at Bayside High School, a Math-for-America Master Teacher Fellow, and a graduate of the Queens College Secondary Mathematics Education Master’s Degree Program, gave an interactive presentation entitled, “Mathematics Research: A Teaching Nightmare or a Dream Come True?” TIME 2000 students experienced the excitement and challenges of teaching a mathematics research course for high school level.

TEXAS INSTRUMENTS RETURNS TO VISIT TIME 2000

At the monthly October seminar, Ms. Fran Bellows Levy, representative of Texas Instruments, accompanied by Mr. Stan Pappo, TI Regional Instructor, made an exciting and informative presentation on “What’s New at Texas Instruments?” Such new and exciting technology as the TI-nspire was demonstrated and discussed. Similar to a previous special presentation by Dr. Margo Mankus (see 9 November 2004, under Past Events), this type of session supports TIME 2000’s goal of developing state-of-the-art secondary mathematics teachers for the 21st Century.

A WARM WELCOME TO NEW AND RETURNING TIME 2000 STUDENTS

On Tuesday, 11 September, new freshmen and qualifiers had the opportunity to meet their TIME 2000 peers at the first monthly seminar of the 2007-08 academic year. The seminar was designed for students to meet and to get to know each other. Several TIME 2000 faculty members were also present to join in the festivities.
