CONGRESSMAN ANTHONY WEINER PRESENTS U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION GRANT TO TIME 2000

On Friday, 29 May 2009, Rep. Anthony Weiner visited Queens College to present a grant for $190,000 to the TIME 2000 Program, providing tuition for undergraduates pursuing a career in secondary mathematics teaching. Queens College President James Muyskens, and Vice President and Co-director of the grant Sue Henderson, joined Prof. Alice Artzt, Director of TIME 2000 and co-director of the grant, faculty, graduates, and students in accepting the award.

EIGHTH TIME 2000 COHORT GRADUATES

On Thursday, 28 May, each of the 14 undergraduates in the eighth cohort of TIME 2000, received a bachelor's degree in mathematics with a minor in secondary education. Congratulations to the Class of 2009!

TIME 2000 SENIORS RECEIVE OUTSTANDING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

At the Secondary Education and Youth Services Awards Ceremony, TIME 2000 Seniors, Mary Raguseo and Jacqueline West, received Undergraduate Secondary Education Mathematics Outstanding Student Achievement Awards. Congratulations Mary and Jackie!
SEVENTH GRADERS FROM QSI PARTICIPATE IN A TIME 2000 CLASS

11 May 2009
On Monday, 11 May 2009, 32 7th graders and their mathematics teacher, Ms. Nicole Francipane (TIME 2000 Class of 2007) from the Queens School of Inquiry (QSI), participated in the Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations of Education class with TIME 2000 sophomores and their instructor, Professor Frances Curcio. The focus of the class was on a social issue-gender equity. Following the class, everyone was treated to a pizza party to celebrate the collaboration between QSI and TIME 2000.

CLASS OF 2009 READY TO GRADUATE

6 May 09
On Wednesday, 6 May, fourteen TIME 2000 seniors, undergraduates in the eighth TIME 2000 cohort, were honored at a graduation party in the Patio Room at Queens College. More than 140 family, friends, and TIME 2000 students, faculty, and staff were on hand to congratulate them, after viewing their "Guess Who" yearbook presentation. The seniors gave awards to faculty and staff, and then, they received awards from Dr. Alice Artzt, Director of the TIME 2000 Program, Mrs. Naomi Weinman, Program Administrator, and from officers of the Tutoring Club, MT4.

​TIME 2000 SENIORS RECOGNIZED AS SCHOLARS

Queens College Scholarships were awarded to two TIME 2000 seniors, Chaviva Greenberg and Sarah Hofer. Chaviva received a QC Foundation Scholarship and Sarah received a Queens College Scholarship. Congratulations Chaviva and Sarah!


TIME 2000 SOPHOMORES STEP BACK INTO HISTORY

1 May 2009
On Friday, 1 May 2009, the TIME 2000 sophomores went on a field trip to Historic Richmond Town on Staten Island to experience firsthand an era of history discussed in the course they are taking this semester, Historical, Philosophical, and Social Foundations of Education. The main stop was at the Voorlezer's House, the oldest original schoolhouse in the United States, dating back to about 1695, when the Dutch settled on Staten Island.

The Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education selected a TIME 2000 Junior, Sabrina A. Joseph, as the recipient of the Meredes Harris Award for her outstanding work in the Big Buddy Program. Congratulations Sabrina!


TIME 2000 DIRECTOR AND GRADS SPEAK AT THE ANNUAL NCTM CONFERENCE

On Friday, 24 April, TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt, and three TIME 2000 graduates, Mr. Eric Glatz, Class of 2002, Assistant Principal, Queens School of Inquiry, Ms. Sylvia Liu, Class of 2006, mathematics teacher, Queens School of Inquiry, and Ms. Kendal Jones, Class of 2007, mathematics teacher, JHS 194, gave a well-attended presentation entitled, " Using Technology to Create Humorous Lessons that Motivate Students," at the annual conference of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, in Washington, DC.

THE GOLDEN RATIO HIGHLIGHTED AT THE MONTHLY SEMINAR

Mr. Peter Hayes, Roslyn Public Schools, was the guest speaker at the monthly seminar. Students analyzed the mathematical structure of the golden ratio, the Fibonacci series, the golden triangle, and the golden rectangle.

TIME 2000 GRADUATES RETURN TO SHARE THEIR TEACHING EXPERIENCES

Eighteen TIME 2000 graduates from the classes of 2002 through 2008, were guests at the monthly seminar held during the winter recess to accommodate their full-time teaching schedules. The graduates were members of a panel, entertaining questions from the undergraduates about their teaching experiences. Just as successful as the panels on 19 February 2008, 20 February 2007, 21 February 2006, 22 February 2005, 17 February 2004, and 4 March 2003 (see Past Events below), everyone's so impressed with the graduates that they will definitely be invited back next year along with members of the Class of 2009!

TIME 2000 SOPHOMORES BEGIN SPECIALLY DEVELOPED FIELD WORK AT THE QUEENS SCHOOL OF INQUIRY

On Tuesday, 3 February, the sophomores enrolled in SEYS 201W: Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations of Education, began their field work especially designed to highlight the key elements of the course as they are manifested in schools. Ms. Nicole Francipane, TIME 2000 graduate, Class of 2007, is collaborating with Professor Frances Curcio in the implementation of the field work.

At Dr. Artzt's annual dinner reunion on Wednesday, 21 January 2009, Ms. Rocio Saborido, TIME 2000 graduate from the class of 2003, and mathematics teacher at Oceanside High School, Oceanside, NY, was honored for influencing one of her students to become a mathematics teacher. Ms. Saborido, received the award from TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt. Congratulations to this exemplary mathematics educator!

TIME 2000 GRADUATES MAKE A PRESENTATION AT THE ANNUAL REUNION DINNER

At the Annual Reunion Dinner hosted by TIME 2000 Director, Professor Alice Artzt, Mr. Eric Glatz, Undergraduate Class of 2002, Graduate Class of 2005, and Assistant Principal at the Queens School of Inquiry (QSI), and Ms. Nicole Francipane, Class of 2007, and mathematics teacher at QSI, capitalized on the features of some state-of-the-art technology in their presentation entitled, "Using SmartBoard with SmartNotebook."
TIME 2000 STUDENTS VISIT THE SALVADORI CENTER AT CCNY

On Monday, 12 January, TIME 2000 students went to a mathematics and architecture workshop at the Salvadori Center at CCNY. To begin developing application examples for teaching, they investigated mathematical relationships between shapes and weights.


EIGHTH GRADERS ATTEND CLASS WITH TIME 2000 FRESHMEN

11 December 2008
On Thursday, 11 December, 32 eighth graders from the Louis Armstrong Middle School accompanied their teacher, Mrs. Merna Porter, to Queens College, where they participated in an educational psychology class with TIME 2000 freshmen. The lesson was on attribution theory. Following the lesson, the eighth graders were guests at a pizza party thanking them for allowing the freshmen to observe them learning mathematics throughout the fall semester.

TIME 2000 SENIORS SHARE EXCITING MATHEMATICS ACTIVITIES

At the December seminar, four seniors, Sarah Hofer, Jackie West, Krysten Malloy, and Mary Raguseo, shared the lessons they created for assignments in their education courses. They demonstrated how well prepared they are to begin student teaching in spring 2009.

TIME 2000 FRESHMEN COMPLETE 10-WEEK FIELD WORK AT THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL (LAMS)

On Monday, 3 December, the freshmen completed their required 10-week field work for SEYS 221: The Psychology of Learning Mathematics. Mrs. Merna Porter, grade 8 mathematics teacher at LAMS, shared her insights and practices related to motivating students to learn mathematics.

TIME 2000 GRADUATES SPEAK AT ATMNYC ANNUAL CONFERENCE

On Saturday, 22 November, 6 TIME 2000 graduates made a presentation at the Annual Conference of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics of New York City, at Hunter College. The title of the session was "Using Technology to Create Humorous Lessons that Motivate Students." The presenters were Eric Glatz, Queens School of Inquiry; Kendal Jones, JHS 194; Deepak Joseph, Bayside HS; Samantha MacKinnon, IS 93; Lysaundra Bisal, H. Frank Carey HS; Sylvia Liu, Queens School of Inquiry, and John Aguirre, Class of 2008. In April 2009, they will also be speaking at the Annual Meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in Washington, DC.
TIME 2000 FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR INDUCTED INTO THE LONG ISLAND MATHEMATICS EDUCATORS’ HALL OF FAME

Dr. Alice Artzt, Director of the TIME 2000 Program, was inducted into the Long Island Mathematics Educators’ Hall of Fame for her outstanding contributions to the mathematics education community as a teacher, researcher, scholar, author, colleague, and friend. The third annual event took place at Verdi’s of Westbury. Many colleagues and former students were present to join in the celebration. CONGRATULATIONS, DR. ARTZT!

GEOMETER PRESENTS WORKSHOP AT MONTHLY SEMINAR

Professor Emerita of Mathematics, Dr. Doris Schattschneider, Moravian College, Bethlehem, PA, a creator of Geometer’s Sketchpad, exemplified the connection between mathematics and art in her workshop entitled, “M. C. Escher’s Use of Transformations to Create Tiles.” Her presentation of Escher’s work, her use of Geometer’s Sketchpad, and her activities gave TIME 2000 undergraduates an appreciation of the complexities of Escher’s art as well as an understanding of the underlying mathematics.
