On Thursday evening, 20 May, ten of the TIME 2000 seniors joined Queens College faculty and staff attending the Queens College Gala on Park Avenue in Manhattan. A wonderful time was had by all!


NINTH TIME 2000 COHORT GRADUATES

On Thursday, 27 May, each of the 14 undergraduates in the ninth cohort of TIME 2000, received a bachelor's degree in mathematics with a minor in secondary education. Congratulations to the Class of 2010!

At the Secondary Education and Youth Services Awards Ceremony, TIME 2000 Senior, Maria Leon Chu, received the Herb Fremont Award. The Fremont Award is given to an outstanding senior who will enter the graduate program in secondary mathematics education following graduation from Queens College. Congratulations, Maria!

TIME 2000 GRADUATE RECEIVES THE ALICE ARTZT AWARD FOR TEACHING

At the Secondary Education and Youth Services Department (SEYS) Awards Ceremony, Ms. Samantha MacKinnon, member of the TIME 2000 Class of 2007, received the 2010 Alice Artzt Award for Mathematics Teaching. The cash award is bestowed upon a master's degree graduate for academic excellence, passion for teaching mathematics, and commitment to the profession. Congratulations, Samantha!
​SEVENTH GRADERS FROM QSI PARTICIPATE IN A TIME 2000 CLASS

On Monday, 17 May 2010, 25 7th graders and their mathematics teacher, Ms. Nicole Francipane (TIME 2000 Class of 2007) from the Queens School of Inquiry (QSI), participated in the Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations of Education class with TIME 2000 sophomores and their instructor, Professor Frances Curcio. The focus of the class was on a social issue-gender equity. Following the class, everyone was treated to a pizza party to celebrate the collaboration between QSI and TIME 2000.

TIME 2000 SENIOR RECEIVES MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT AWARD

TIME 2000 Senior, Maria Leon Chu is the recipient of the 2010 Claire and Samuel Jacobs Award. This cash award is bestowed upon a graduating senior for excellence in mathematics. Maria, a student teacher at Flushing High School and a recipient of many other awards, is a great role model for future secondary mathematics teachers. CONGRATULATIONS, MARIA!
CLASS OF 2010 READY TO GRADUATE

On Wednesday, 5 May, fourteen TIME 2000 seniors, undergraduates in the ninth TIME 2000 cohort, were honored at a graduation party in the Patio Room at Queens College. More than 150 family, friends, and TIME 2000 students, faculty, and staff were on hand to congratulate them, after viewing their Yearbook presentation highlighting "Senior Superlatives." The seniors gave awards to faculty and staff, and then, they received awards from Dr. Alice Artzt, Director of the TIME 2000 Program, Mrs. Naomi Weinman, Program Administrator, and from officers of the Tutoring Club, MT4.

TIME 2000 SOPHOMORES VISIT THE VOORLEZER'S HOUSE

On Friday, 30 April, the TIME 2000 sophomores enrolled in SEYS 201W: Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations in Education, visited Historic Richmond Town with Professor Frances Curcio, to view mathematics textbooks from the early and middle 19th century, and to visit the oldest original school house in the United States, The Voorlezer's House (c. 1695).

SHARING EXCITING SESSIONS ATTENDED AT LIMAÇON AND REVIEWING PORTFOLIOS

At the April seminar, TIME 2000 undergraduates Debra, Melanie, Bessie, Greg, Eugene, Rachel, Alice, Amy, and Yumi shared lessons learned at LIMAÇON, a mathematics education conference at SUNY Old Westbury, attended by TIME 2000 students, on Friday, 16 April 2010. Some students also shared suggestions for creating the required TIME 2000 portfolio.

NEW OFFICERS OF THE TIME 2000 TUTORING CLUB ELECTED

The new officers of the Tutoring Club were elected at the April seminar. The new officers for the 2010-2011 academic year will be Reeba (Secretary), Johnanna (President), Maria (Vice President), and Chanelle (Treasurer)

TIME 2000 STUDENTS ANALYZE DEAL OR NO DEAL?

At the monthly seminar, guest speakers from the Great Neck School District, Ms. Helen Kramer, Assistant Principal, Great Neck North High School, and Ms. Joan Casazzone, Mathematics Department Chairman, Great Neck South High School, conducted a motivational and inspiring session entitled, Deal or No Deal: Does the Banker Play Fairly? TIME 2000 students were actively involved in the statistical analyses of the game as they viewed several video clips.

TIME 2000 GRADUATES RETURN TO SHARE THEIR TEACHING EXPERIENCES

Eighteen TIME 2000 graduates from the classes of 2002 through 2009, were guests at the monthly seminar held during the winter recess to accommodate their full-time teaching schedules. The graduates were members of a panel, entertaining questions from the undergraduates about their teaching experiences. Just as successful as the panels on 17 February 2009, 19 February 2008, 20 February 2007, 21 February 2006, 22 February 2005, 17 February 2004, and 4 March 2003 (see Past Events below), everyone's so impressed with the graduates that they will definitely be invited back next year along with members of the class of 2010!

TIME 2000 SOPHOMORES BEGIN SPECIALLY DESIGNED FIELD WORK AT THE QUEENS SCHOOL OF INQUIRY

On Tuesday, 9 February, the sophomores enrolled in SEYS 201W: Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations of Education, began their field work especially designed to highlight the key elements of the course as they are manifested in the schools. Ms. Nicole Francipane, TIME 2000 graduate, Class of 2007, is collaborating with Professor Frances Curcio, in the implementation of the field work.

TIME 2000 UNDERGRADUATE MAKES A PRESENTATION AT THE ANNUAL REUNION

At the Annual Reunion Dinner hosted by TIME 2000 Director, Professor Alice Artzt, Mr. Sung Yan Chiu, Class of 2010, shared his knowledge and skills of origami and related the art of paper folding to mathematics, calling the hands-on activity-Mathigami. Everyone followed directions and attempted to make a paper crane. Sung demonstrated how to integrate mathematics and art-Thanks, Sung! .
TIME 2000 GRADUATE HONORED

At Dr. Artzt's Annual Reunion Dinner on Monday, 25 January 2010, Ms. Irina (Zavurov) Kimyagarov, TIME 2000 undergraduate, Class of 2002, graduate Class of 2006, and mathematics department chairman at Elmont Memorial High School, was honored for mentoring and supervising student teachers. She became the second mathematics educator to receive the Mary Felicetti Memorial Award for Mentoring and Supervision. Ms. Kimyagarov received the award from TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt. Congratulations to this exemplary mathematics educator!

TIME 2000 STUDENT HONORS HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER

At Dr. Artzt's Annual Reunion Dinner on Monday, 25 January 2010, Ms. Marylin Cano, mathematics teacher at the Queens High School of Teaching, was honored for influencing TIME 2000 junior, Michelle Yacob, to become a mathematics teacher. The award was bestowed by TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt. Congratulations to Ms. Cano!

TIME 2000 DIRECTOR AND GRADS SPEAK AT NASSAU COUNTY MATH TEACHERS' AND SUPERVISORS'CONFERENCE

On Friday, 8 January, TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt, was joined by 7 TIME 2000 graduates in presenting the keynote address, "Math and Humor, No Joking" at a K-8 Conference sponsored by Nassau County Mathematics Teachers and Supervisors. Mr. Eric Glatz, Class of 2002, Assistant Principal at the Queens School of Inquiry; Ms. Sylvia Liu, Class of 2006, teacher at the Queens School of Inquiry; Ms. Tanica Meade, Class of 2006, teacher at CIS 339; Ms. Kendal Jones Askins, Class of 2007, teacher at JHS 194; Ms. Lysaundra Bisal, Class of 2007, teacher at H. Frank Carey HS; Ms. Samantha MacKinnon, Class of 2007, teacher at I.S 93; and Mr. John Aguirre, Class of 2008, presented snippets of humorous mathematics lessons at Molloy College. Thanks to all who showed that MATH CAN BE FUN!


TIME 2000 FRESHMEN COMPLETE 10- WEEK FIELD WORK AT THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL (LAMS)

On Monday, 7 December, the freshmen completed their required 10-week field work for SEYS 221: The Psychology of Learning Mathematics. Mrs. Merna Porter, grade 8 mathematics teacher at LAMS, shared her insights and practices related to motivating students to learn mathematics.

​EIGHTH GRADERS ATTEND CLASS WITH TIME 2000 FRESHMEN

3 December 2009
On Thursday, 3 December, 30 eighth graders from the Louis Armstrong Middle School accompanied their teacher, Mrs. Merna Porter, to Queens College, where they participated in an educational psychology class with the 30 TIME 2000 freshmen. The lesson, conducted by TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt, was on attribution theory. Following the lesson, the eighth graders were guests at a pizza party, thanking them for allowing the freshmen to observe them learning mathematics throughout the fall semester.

At the monthly seminar, Senior Sung Yan Chiu conducted a workshop entitled, Mathigami: Math and the Art of Paper Folding. TIME 2000 undergraduates were challenged to create origami models. Sung demonstrated his talent and skills in the art of origami!

NEW YORK STATE K-8 MENTOR, JOANNE FLEMING,FEATURED AT THE OCTOBER SEMINAR

"The Equity Principle in Action: Differentiating Middle School Math Instruction," a special session conducted by Ms. Joanne Fleming, Mineola Middle School, was the focus of the monthly seminar. Exciting instructional strategies, tasks, games, and activities engaged the TIME 2000 undergraduates, illustrating ways to reach all learners with meaningful mathematics.

On Tuesday, 15 September, new freshmen and qualifiers had the opportunity to meet their TIME 2000 peers at the first monthly seminar of the 2009-2010 academic year. The seminar was designed for students to meet and to get to know each other. Several TIME 2000 faculty members were also present to join in the festivities.

TIME 2000 SENIOR RECEIVES AMTNYS SCHOLARSHIP

September 2009
The entire Queens College community extends congratulations to Maria Leon Chu for receiving a 2009 scholarship from the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State (AMTNYS). This is the third time since 2001 that a TIME 2000 senior has received this highly competitive, prestigious, statewide award, bestowed upon a graduating senior entering the mathematics teaching profession! Maria joins Tara Wachter (2001) and Rebecca Steiner (2004) in this outstanding achievement. She will receive the award at the annual conference in Buffalo in November. Congratulations, Maria!

KAPPA DELTA PI RECOGNIZES A TIME 2000 STUDENT

September 2009
Samantha Aiello, a TIME 2000 transfer student from Queensborough Community College (QCC), received the prestigious Service Learning Leader Award from Kappa Delta Pi. Ms. Aiello served as president of Alpha Gamma Sigma Chapter at QCC.
