TENTH TIME 2000 COHORT GRADUATES

On Thursday, 2 June, each of the 18 undergraduates in the tenth cohort of TIME 2000, received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a minor in secondary education. Congratulations to the Class of 2011!

On Thursday, 19 May, at the annual Kappa Delta Pi induction ceremony, three TIME 2000 seniors, Jouleni Cruz, Naava Lightman, and Michelle Yacoub, became members of this international honor society. CONGRATULATIONS Jouleni, Naava, and Michelle!


EIGHTH AND NINTH GRADERS FROM QSI PARTICIPATE IN A TIME 2000 CLASS

16 May 11
On Monday, 16 May 2011, 21 8th graders and their mathematics teacher, Ms. Lisa Carire (TIME 2000 Class of 2009) from the Queens School of Inquiry (QSI), participated in the Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations of Education class with TIME 2000 sophomores and their instructor, Professor Frances Curcio. The focus of the class was on a social issue—gender equity. Following the class, everyone was treated to a pizza party to celebrate the collaboration between QSI and TIME 2000.

TIME 2000 SOPHOMORES VISIT THE VOORLEZER’S HOUSE

On Friday, 6 May, the TIME 2000 sophomores enrolled in SEYS 201W: Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations in Education, visited Historic Richmond Town in Staten Island, with Professor Frances Curcio, to visit the oldest original school house in the United States, The Voorlezer’s House (c. 1695).

TIME 2000 JUNIORS WIN MATHEMATICAL CONTEST IN MODELING

May 2011
Under the direction of mathematics professor, Dr. Christopher Hanusa, TIME 2000 Juniors, Amy Lee and Xiuwen (Sammi) Lei, were designated as Meritorious Winners in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling administered by the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications. TIME 2000 Junior, Alice Brea was recognized for her successful participation. CONGRATULATIONS!


TIME 2000 STUDENTS, STAFF, AND FACULTY ATTEND THE QUEENS COLLEGE GALA

On Tuesday evening, 3 May, ten of the TIME 2000 seniors joined Queens College faculty and staff attending the Queens College Gala at 583 Park Avenue in Manhattan. A wonderful time was had by all!

TIME 2000 GRADUATES RETURN TO SHARE THEIR TEACHING EXPERIENCES

Fifteen TIME 2000 graduates from the classes of 2002 through 2010, were guests at the monthly seminar held during the winter recess to accommodate their full-time teaching schedules. The graduates were members of a panel, describing their teaching experiences. Just as successful as the panels on 16 February 2010, 17 February 2009, 19 February 2008, 20 February 2007, 21 February 2006, 22 February 2005, 17 February 2004, and 4 March 2003 (see Past Events below), everyone’s so impressed with the graduates that they will definitely be invited back next year along with members of the class of 2011!

​TIME 2000 STUDENTS VISIT CYBERCHASE AT WNET-NY

26 January 2011
Nineteen TIME 2000 students participated in a specially designed Cyberchase workshop at WNET, on West 33rd Street in Manhattan. They were introduced to VITAL, the online video-based teaching and learning resource, they were informed of the new middle/high school mathematics series, “Get the Math,” and they discussed the PBS KIDS GO! mathematics series that fosters positive attitudes towards mathematics.

TIME 2000 STUDENT HONORS HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER

Chiesi, mathematics teacher at Bayside High School, was honored for influencing TIME 2000 senior, Peggy Lam, to become a mathematics teacher. The award was bestowed by TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt. Congratulations to Ms. Chiesi!

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS WITH TIME 2000 FRESHMEN

At Dr. Artzt’s Reunion Dinner, Mrs. Ruth Grossman received an appreciation and recognition award for 10 years of service in the TIME 2000 Program. TIME 2000 graduate, Ms. Ferrin Mohammed-Bujan described Mrs. Grossman’s warm and nurturing personality, endearing her to all of the students and faculty! The award was bestowed by TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt.

TIME 2000 FRESHMEN COMPLETE 10- WEEK FIELD WORK AT THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL (LAMS)

On Monday, 6 December, the freshmen completed their required 10-week field work for SEYS 221: The Psychology of Learning Mathematics. Ms. Merna Porter, grade 8 mathematics teacher at LAMS, shared her insights and practices related to motivating students to learn mathematics.

TIME 2000 SOPHOMORE RECOGNIZED FOR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

TIME 2000 Sophomore, YunYun Lin, was honored as a Presidential Achiever, earning a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.75 since her freshman year. Her name appears on the Presidential Achievers' Honor Roll. Congratulations Yuny!

​QUEENS COLLEGE PRESIDENTIAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING BESTOWED UPON A TIME 2000 FACULTY MEMBER

At the Queens College Faculty Assembly on Wednesday, 13 October, Professor Frances Curcio, a member of the TIME 2000 mathematics education faculty, received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award is based on recommendations from students that are reviewed by a committee of faculty and students across the College community, and submitted to President Muyskens for review. Dr. Curcio joins other distinguished TIME 2000 faculty who have also received the award: Dr. Alice Artzt, Director, TIME 2000, in 1997; Dr. Martin Braun, Professor of Mathematics, in 2001; and Dr. Alan Sultan, Professor of Mathematics, in 2004. Congratulations, Prof. Curcio!

​A WARM WELCOME TO NEW AND RETURNING TIME 2000 STUDENTS

On Tuesday, 21 September, new freshmen and qualifiers had the opportunity to meet their TIME 2000 peers at the first monthly seminar of the 2010-2011 academic year. The seminar was designed for students to meet and to get to know each other. Several TIME 2000 faculty members were also present to join in the festivities.
