TIME 2000 SOPHOMORES VISIT THE VOORLEZER’S HOUSE

11 May 2012
On Friday, 11 May, the TIME 2000 sophomores enrolled in SEYS 201W: Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations in Education, visited Historic Richmond Town in Staten Island, with Professor Frances Curcio, to visit the oldest original school house in the United States, The Voorlezer’s House (c. 1695).

​SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADERS FROM QSI PARTICIPATE IN A TIME 2000 CLASS

7 May 2012
On Monday, 7 May 2012, 21 7th and 8th graders and their mathematics teacher, Ms. Nicole Francipane (TIME 2000 Class of 2007) from the Queens School of Inquiry (QSI), participated in the Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations of Education class with TIME 2000 sophomores and their instructor, Professor Frances Curcio. The focus of the class was on a social issue—gender equity. Following the class, everyone was treated to a pizza party to celebrate the collaboration between QSI and TIME 2000.

On Wednesday, 2 May, 22 TIME 2000 seniors, undergraduates in the eleventh TIME 2000 cohort, were honored at a graduation party in the Student Union at Queens College. More than 200 family, friends, and TIME 2000 students, faculty, and staff were on hand to congratulate them, after viewing their e-Yearbook. The seniors received awards from Dr. Alice Artzt, Director of the TIME 2000 Program, Mrs. Naomi Weinman, Program Administrator, and from officers of the Tutoring Club, MT4.

On Tuesday evening, 1 May, ten of the TIME 2000 students joined Queens College faculty and staff attending the Queens College Gala at Gotham Hall in Manhattan. A wonderful time was had by all!


TIME 2000 STUDENT-ATHLETES RECOGNIZED FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE TIME 2000

5 April 2012
Senior, Zujenis Pico, member of the Queens College Women’s Swimming and Diving Team, and TIME 2000 Sophomore, Nicole Turato, member of the Queens College Women’s Softball Team were honored at the Queens College President’s Breakfast for Champions for varsity athletes who had earned a 3.0 GPA or higher during the spring 2011 and fall 2012 semesters. Congratulations, Zujenis and Nicole!

On Tuesday, 4 April, two TIME 2000 undergraduates, Mara Markinson and Dwaina Screen, and a TIME 2000 graduate, Michelle Yacoub, accompanied Dr. Alice Artzt, TIME 2000 Director, with other faculty and staff, to the Gala for the Institute for Student Achievement, held at the University Club, New York City.

MATH FOR AMERICA MASTER TEACHER FELLOW, MS. LARISA BUKALOV, GUEST AT MONTHLY SEMINAR

At the March seminar, Ms. Larisa Bukalov, mathematics teacher at Bayside High School and Master Teacher Fellow for Math for America, presented a geometry problem-solving session entitled, “Mathematics is the Queen of the Sciences.” The TIME 2000 undergraduates examined the notion of “proof” and explored some routine and nonroutine geometry problems.

​TIME 2000 GRADUATES RETURN TO SHARE THEIR TEACHING EXPERIENCES

Thirteen TIME 2000 graduates from the classes of 2002 through 2011, were guests at the monthly seminar held during the winter recess to accommodate their full-time teaching schedules. The graduates were members of a panel, describing their teaching experiences. Just as successful as the panels on 22 February 2011, 16 February 2010, 17 February 2009, 19 February 2008, 20 February 2007, 21 February 2006, 22 February 2005, 17 February 2004, and 4 March 2003 (see Past Events), everyone’s so impressed with the graduates that they will definitely be invited back next year along with members of the class of 2012!

It is with great honor and pride that we announce the posting of PBS teaching videos of four TIME 2000 graduates: Ms. Nicole Francipane, grade 7 mathematics teacher, Queens School of Inquiry, Class of 2007; Ms, Ana Mojocoa, high school mathematics teacher at Elmont Memorial High School, Class of 2005; Mr. Chris Persaud, high school mathematics teacher at Elmont Memorial High School, Class of 2003; and Ms. Sabrina Joseph, grade 7 mathematics teacher at Columbia Secondary School for Mathematics, Science, and Engineering, Class of 2010. They were selected to be in the Teaching Channel’s instructional videos that highlight their student-centered teaching, supporting the new Common Core State Standards. CONGRATULATIONS!

TIME 2000 UNDERGRADUATES MAKE A PRESENTATION AT THE ANNUAL REUNION

At the Annual Reunion Dinner hosted by TIME 2000 Director, Professor Alice Artzt, Mara Markinson and Zujenis Pico presented a session on “Teaching Mathematics with an iPad.” They shared many applications (apps), conveying the enthusiasm and excitement of integrating state-of-the-art technology in mathematics instruction.

On Wednesday, 11 January, more than 30 TIME 2000 undergraduates attended a specially arranged tour and workshop at the Museum of the Moving Image, Astoria, Queens. During the workshop, short videos were created and posted on YouTube. Ideas for using museum exhibits and workshops for developing mathematics concepts in an exciting way were discussed.

EIGHTH GRADERS ATTEND CLASS WITH TIME 2000 FRESHMEN

6 December 2011
On Tuesday, 6 December, 30 eighth graders from the Louis Armstrong Middle School accompanied their teacher, Ms. Merna Porter, to Queens College, where they participated in an educational psychology class with 28 TIME 2000 freshmen. The lesson, conducted by TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt, was on attribution theory. Following the lesson, the eighth graders were guests at a pizza party, thanking them for allowing the freshmen to observe them learning mathematics throughout the fall semester.

Congratulations to Ms. Rocio Saborido, high school mathematics teacher at Oceanside High School, undergraduate class of 2003, and graduate class of 2007, for being National Board Certified. TIME 2000 FRESHMEN BEGIN FIELD WORK AT THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL

TIME 2000 freshmen were welcomed by Mrs. Merna Porter, grade 8 mathematics teacher at the Louis Armstrong Middle School, East Elmhurst. They began their 10-session, in vivo observations aligned with the psychological principles they will be discussing in SEYS 221: The Psychology of Learning. They are off to a great start!

A WARM WELCOME TO NEW AND RETURNING TIME 2000 STUDENTS

On Tuesday, 13 September, new freshmen and qualifiers had the opportunity to meet their TIME 2000 peers at the first monthly seminar of the 2011-2012 academic year. The seminar was designed for students to meet and to get to know each other. Several TIME 2000 faculty members were also present to join in the festivities.
