TIME 2000 STUDENTS PLAN, HOST, AND PARTICIPATE IN THE FIFTH ANNUAL FIELD DAY

On Thursday, 8 June, TIME 2000 undergraduates and recent TIME 2000 graduates participated in the Fifth Annual Field Day. There was plenty of enthusiasm, energy, and excitement during each activity. The event was such a big hit, plans are already being made for the Sixth Annual Field Day in 2018!

​TIME 2000 CLASS OF 2007, AND MATHEMATICS TEACHERS HONORED AT DR. ARTZT’S REUNION

Dr. Artzt’s annual reunion attracted more than 150 former and current students. The sixth TIME 2000 cohort, the Class of 2007, was honored on the 10th anniversary of their graduation. Four of the original 14 graduates were present: Ms. Kendal Askins, Mr. Deepak Joseph, Mr. Michael London, and Ms. Nadia Jackson. Ms. Askins, teacher at the East Strasburg Middle School, PA, was one of three teachers receiving an award for inspiring a future mathematics teacher—nominated by TIME 2000 Junior, Ms. Amalia Kouloglou. Former Queens College students, Ms. Larisa Bukalov and Mr. Michael Riccardo, teachers at Bayside High School, were also nominated by Amalia, and received awards. The Mary Felicetti Award for being an outstanding cooperating teacher, nominated by Ms. Olivia Pen, was bestowed upon Ms. Rosmery Milczewski, Queens College graduate and teacher at Flushing International High School.  Mr. Tallin Lamonca, Queens College graduate,  mathematics teacher at the Louis Armstrong Middle School, and one of the winners of the Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) math song competition, entertained with his winning song, “That’s What Makes It a Function!” A special presentation on “Computers, Robotics and Oh My! was delivered by Mr. John Chae, member of the first TIME 2000 Class of 2002, Graduate Class of 2005, and mathematics teacher at Syosset High School. A great time was had by all!

​TIME 2000 GRADUATES RECEIVE THE ALICE ARTZT AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING

Ms. Alyssa Khan and Ms. Nerline Payen, TIME 2000 graduates in the Class of 2014, and master’s degree recipients in the Class of 2017, were awarded the Alice Artzt Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award is bestowed upon graduates who have a high GPA, and a devotion, a passion and a vision for teaching mathematics. Congratulations Alyssa and Nerline!

TIME 2000 SENIOR RECEIVES THE TIME 2000 GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP

At the special awards ceremony hosted by the Department of Secondary Education and Youth Services, Ms. Alicia Bharat received the TIME 2000 Graduate Scholarship sponsored by Professor Frances R. Curcio. In addition to Alicia’s high GPA, she was also devoted to serving TIME 2000 in various capacities. She will continue to study for her master’s degree in secondary mathematics education at Queens College.

At the Secondary Education and Youth Services Awards Ceremony, Angelina Ezrattywas one of two graduating seniors to receive the Herb Fremont Award. The Fremont Award is given to an outstanding senior who will enter the Graduate Program in Secondary Mathematics Education following graduation from Queens College. Congratulations, Angelina!

ALGEBRA STUDENTS FROM JOHN BOWNE HIGH SCHOOL PARTICIPATE IN A TIME 2000 CLASS

On Monday, 15 May 2017, 19 algebra students and their mathematics teacher, Ms. Sabrina Joseph, from John Bowne High School (JBHS), participated in the Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations of Education class with TIME 2000 sophomores and their instructor, Professor Frances Curcio. The focus of the class was on a social issue—gender equity. Following the class, everyone was treated to a pizza party to celebrate the collaboration between JBHS and TIME 2000.

CLASS OF 2017 READY TO GRADUATE

On Wednesday, 10 May, 14 TIME 2000 seniors, undergraduates in the sixteenth TIME 2000 cohort, were honored at a graduation party in the Patio Room at Queens College. More than 125 family, friends, and TIME 2000 students, faculty, and staff were on hand to congratulate them, after viewing their e-Yearbook. The seniors received awards from Dr. Alice Artzt, Director of the TIME 2000 Program, Mrs. Naomi Weinman, Program Administrator, and from officers of the Tutoring Club, MT4.

TIME 2000 SOPHOMORES VISIT THE VOORLEZER’S HOUSE

On Friday, 5 May, the TIME 2000 sophomores enrolled in SEYS 201W: Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations in Education, visited Historic Richmond Town in Staten Island, with Professor Frances Curcio, to visit the oldest original schoolhouse in the North America, The Voorlezer’s House (c. 1695).

At the April seminar, TIME 2000 undergraduates, Yael and Bushra, Xinying, and Sam shared lessons learned at LIMAÇON, a mathematics education conference held at SUNY Old Westbury, attended by the TIME 2000 students on Friday, 17 March 2017, at SUNY Old Westbury. Exemplary portfolios were also available for students to review.

TIME 2000 GRADUATES RETURN TO SHARE THEIR TEACHING EXPERIENCES

Twenty-four TIME 2000 graduates from the classes of 2002 through 2016, were guests at the monthly seminar held during the winter recess to accommodate their full-time teaching schedules. Most of the graduates shared their experiences and advice. Just as successful as the panels on 16 February 2016, 17 February 2015, 18 February 2014, 19 February 2013, 21 February 2012, 22 February 2011, 16 February 2010, 17 February 2009, 19 February 2008, 20 February 2007, 21 February 2006, 22 February 2005, 17 February 2004, and 4 March 2003 (see Past Events), everyone’s so impressed with the graduates that they will definitely be invited back next year along with members of the class of 2017!

TIME 2000 SOPHOMORES BEGIN FIELD WORK JOHN BOWNE HIGH SCHOOL

Thursday, 2 February
On Thursday, 2 February 2017, the TIME 2000 sophomores began their field work associated with SEYS 201W: Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations of Education, at John Bowne High School. Mrs. Sabrina Joseph, a TIME 2000 graduate, Class of 2010, is hosting the sophomores as she meets with them for pre-lesson discussions and invites them to observe her teach seniors in Financial Algebra and freshmen in Algebra 1. The sophomores will also be tutoring algebra students. It will be a busy and exciting semester for everyone!
​AN EXCURSION TO THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF MATHEMATICS

On Wednesday, 18 January, the TIME 2000 undergraduates took a fascinating journey into the world of mathematics at the National Museum of Mathematics, 11 East 26th Street, New York City. In addition to exploring the many hands-on exhibits, they participated in a knot theory seminar. The motivational power of informal, exploratory mathematics activities made a lasting impression on the future secondary mathematics teachers.

​EIGHTH GRADERS ATTEND CLASS WITH TIME 2000 FRESHMEN

Thrusday, 8 December 2016
On Thursday, 8 December, 30 eighth graders from the Louis Armstrong Middle School accompanied their teacher, Ms. Merna Porter, to Queens College, where they participated in an educational psychology class with 21 TIME 2000 freshmen. The lesson, conducted by TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt, was on attribution theory. Following the lesson, the eighth graders were guests at a pizza party, thanking them for allowing the freshmen to observe them learning mathematics throughout the fall semester.

At the December seminar, six seniors, Alicia Bharat, Jean Chen, Daniel DeSousa, Jessica Hannon, Razana Khan, and Joanna Ortiz and shared lessons they created in their methods course and their technology and learning course. They demonstrated how well prepared they are to begin student teaching in spring 2017!

TIME 2000 FRESHMEN COMPLETE 10-WEEK FIELD WORK AT THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL (LAMS)

On Monday, 5 December, the TIME 2000 freshmen completed their required 10-week field work for SEYS 221: The Psychology of Learning Mathematics. Ms. Merna Porter, grade 8 mathematics teacher at LAMS, shared her insights and practices related to motivating students to learn mathematics.

The TIME 2000 undergraduates were treated to a very special technology seminar on Tuesday, 15 November. Mr. Dana Morse, Educational Technology Consultant, Texas Instruments, Inc., discussed “TI Tips for Building Mathematics Confidence (GL 8-12).” The extraordinary power and the instructional potential of the state-of-the-art TI hand-held device were revealed and explored.

​​ DR. JENNIFER QUINN DELIVERS THE KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT THE FIFTEENTH ANNUAL TIME 2000 CONFERENCE
 
 
On Friday, 4 November, TIME 2000 hosted its fifteenth annual conference, Celebrating Mathematics Teaching. More than 400 high school students from 27 schools in the New York- Metropolitan region, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, attended with more than 35 of their teachers. Also in attendance were 85 undergraduates, preservice teachers, and college faculty members. The opening session featured Dr. Jennifer Quinn, Professor of Mathematics, University of Washington-Tacoma. Her dynamic presentation, “Epic Math Battles,” set the tone for an outstanding conference. Exemplary mathematics teachers made exciting presentations that involved the conference participants in mathematical investigations and explorations. The 65 TIME 2000 undergraduates volunteered to prepare for and assist at the conference. Seven TIME 2000 graduates returned to be on the program and two participated in a panel discussion conducted by TIME 2000 Senior, Alicia Bharat. Special guest, Dr. James Simons, long-time supporter of the Conference, shared some inspiring personal remarks. A Texas Instrument handheld device and TIME 2000 gifts were raffled at the luncheon. Many thanks to Mathematics for America, MfA, for generously funding the conference.

TIME 2000 STUDENTS MEET MATHEMATICS ON A POOL TABLE

At the monthly seminar, TIME 2000 students participated in “The Mathematics of Billiards,” presented by Mr. Andy Segal, Trick-shot World Champion. The students had the opportunity to study the angles, apply their skills, and experience the mathematics in a different context. Everyone was impressed with Mr. Segal’s presentation.

On Monday, 19 September, the TIME 2000 freshmen and new students began their 10-week field experience at the Louis Armstrong Middle School, East Elmhurst, NY. The freshmen will observe Mrs. Merna Porter (far left) teach one of her grade 8 mathematics classes, and participate in prelesson and postlesson discussions with Mrs. Porter and Dr. Frances Curcio (far right), Queens College supervisor. The field work fulfills a New York State certification requirement in conjunction with SEYS 221: The Psychology of Learning, taught by TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt.
​A WARM WELCOME TO NEW AND RETURNING TIME 2000 STUDENTS

On Tuesday, 13 September, new freshmen and qualifiers had the opportunity to meet their TIME 2000 peers at the first monthly seminar of the 2016-2017 academic year. The seminar was designed for students to meet and to get to know each other. Several TIME 2000 faculty members were also present to join in the festivities.
