Student-Led Projects: Call for Proposals, Fall 2010 (Archived)

Student-led project proposals are submitted by students. Awards will fund student-designed projects supervised by a faculty mentor. Undergraduate students from any major are invited to apply.

  • Funded projects will require sign-off from department chair. We will ask for department chair approval once award decisions have been made.
  • The funding period will be January to August 2011; all award funds must be spent by June 30, 2011.
  • Award decisions will be announced by November 15.
  • We will ask award recipients to provide a brief summary of the outcomes of their project(s), including accomplishments and future directions.
  • Deadline to submit proposals: Friday, October 29, 2010

Award type - Student recipients receive a fellowship of $1,000. Faculty mentors receive $250 to be used toward equipment or supplies.

Application process – Project proposals, due October 29, should be submitted as a single PDF, RTF, or DOC (MS Word) file that must include the following:

  • Project title, student researcher name and major (or majors).
  • Faculty mentor name and departmental affiliation.
  • Project summary (400 words maximum), discussing the proposed research activity (background, goals, methodology, and relevance).
  • Statement (200 words maximum) about the student applicant's interests as they apply to the project and her or his qualifications to carry out the research (relevant courses taken, laboratory or field research experience, etc.). Qualifications may be provided in CV (résumé) format.
  • A confirmation of agreement from faculty mentor, indicating consent to serve as mentor on the project. Be sure to speak with your faculty mentor before you submit your proposal. We will contact faculty mentors of all students who receive awards, to confirm their agreement to serve as mentors. (When you submit your proposal, an email will be sent to your faculty mentor, with a notification about your submission.)
