An ePortfolio (short for electronic portfolio, also called digital portfolio) is the virtual version of a physical portfolio: a collection of documents assembled for a specific purpose.
In higher education, ePortfolios are used by both students (as part of course or degree requirements) and faculty (to assemble research or teaching materials). ePortfolios can also be flexible resources in institutional assessment of student learning.
A student ePortfolio might contain information about progress through an academic degree alongside samples of work (writing samples, summaries of projects, and reflections on progress) and discussion of future objectives. Such documents are assembled and organized inside a web-based interface that might incorporate a variety of file types including text, images, and sound.
ePortfolios at Queens: the QPortfolio Project
The Center for Teaching & Learning has been collaborating with faculty (particularly from GSLIS and SEYS, but also from a number of other departments) on a range of pedagogical applications of ePortfolios.
The ePortfolio platform we support directly from the Center for Teaching and Learning is Epsilen, a platform chosen by a college-wide committee in spring 2009. (The group evaluated over a half dozen different platforms.) Since fall 2009, faculty and students have been working with Epsilen ePortfolios for a variety of curricular purposes.
To get a QPortfolio account on Epsilen, create one at http://www.epsilen.com using your Queens College email address. (Faculty or students without a QC email address may sign up to get one here.)
Origins: Making Connections
Our current QPortfolio began when a team of QC faculty participated in a seminar, Making Connections ePortfolio Program, held at LaGuardia Community College from 2008 to 2010. The program, supported by FIPSE and involving with 30 New York City area higher education institutions, helped us develop the plans for our campus ePortfolio implementation.
Current Collaboration: Making Transfer Connections
We are one of the five CUNY campuses involved in a Title V funded project, Making Transfer Connections. The project collaborators are working to develop and test ways to use ePortfolio to advance student transfer success and completion of BA degrees. The five CUNY campuses involved are Queens College and Lehman College, plus LaGuardia, Queensborough, and Bronx Community Colleges.
Making Transfer Connections has monthly seminars at LaGuardia Community College. We distribute announcements about these to our ePortfolios email list.
To get regular announcements about QPortfolio events, please send us an email, and we will add you to our email list. |
