GENERAL DUTIES

​In accordance with the policies of the City University of New York and individual colleges/units, and under supervision, incumbents perform duties supporting campus/location public safety and security.

Campus Security Assistants work closely with Campus Peace Officers. The Major distinction between a Campus Peace Officer and a Campus Secuirty Assistant is that Campus Security Assistants do not receive Peace Officer status.

Typical Post Duties

  • Act as a First Responder to alarms and calls for service
  • Observe campus activities, reporting suspicious behavior and other incidents to Central Dispatch and/or a ranking officer within Public Safety
  • Enforce college rules and regulations as specified in Standard Operating Procedures
  • Check IDs and parking passes/decals (where applicable) of students, faculty,staff, and visitors,in accordance with the College's access policy
  • Answer department telephone lines, including emergency calls
  • Provide travel directions to college and to college campus buildings, offices and services
  • Accept items to campus lost and found
  • Occasionally, at some colleges, driving the college vehicle providing a priving or walking safety escort or to assist the campus public safety officer during emergency transport off campus and other events on campus as specifically assisnged (a valid driver's license is required for this purpose)

Typical Administrative Duties

  • Maintain a personal record (memo book) of daily job activities and incidents, as they occur, in the manner determined by the Campus Public Safety director
  • When assigned, carefully monitor the premises through the campus CCTV system
  • Perform assisgned Fire Safety duties, including acting as a Fire Warden or Fire Guard during fire drills, emergencies, and other building evacuations
  • Act as a Central Dispatcher, when assigned
  • When assigned, maintain post and tour logs, guaranteeing that logs are surrent and entries are up-to-date
  • Maintain radio contact with the Department's Cental Dispatch

Additional Information & Resources

Section 89-G, Article 7A of the New York General Business Law requires all persons engaged in security gaurd activities be registered with the New York Department of State (DOS), and complete all training (unless exempt) at schools approved by the Divison of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). The following training courses are required:

Initial Training Requirements:

  • 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training- A general introductory course. you must complete this course and submit a copy of the certificate issued to you with your secuirty guard application
  • 16 Hour On-The-Job Traning (OIT)- A course relevant to the duties of guards,requirments of the work site, and the needs of the employer. You must complete this training within 90 days of emaployment as a security gaurd

Annual Training Requirement

  • 8 Hour Annual In-Service Training- This course must be completed each calendar year you hold a secuirty guard registration. your registration is issued for two years, therefore, you must complete two 8 hour Annual In-Service training courses within your registration effective and expiration dates to be eligible for renewal
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. ​High School Diploma or GED
  2. A valid NEw york State Security Gaurd License (See Additional Information & Resources below for details on the licensing process)
  3. United Stated Citizenship or Permanent Resident Status
  4. Demonstrable English language proficiency: be able to speak, read, write and comprehend the English Language. English proficiency will be evalusted at the time of interview
  5. A valid diriver's license from any state or territory of the United States of America, might be required

COMPENSATION

​New Hire- $12.66/hr**

Incumbent- $14.33/hr

** This amount reflects a 13% salary suppression in effect for the first 24 months of employment
