The State of Powdermaker Hall

On August 15, Queens College will officially take occupancy of the renovated Powdermaker Hall. OCT has been involved with various aspects of the building.
Wireless access to the Internet has been set up throughout the building.

In the middle of August, the OCT staff will begin to install technology equipment as it arrives. Powdermaker Hall will consist of 29 classrooms; each classroom will have a mounted projector and speakers in the ceiling. An audio-visual storage closet in each room will contain DVD and VCR players and an overhead projector. Each room will also have a pull-down screen and computer hookup capabilities. Classes will be scheduled but the classrooms may not all be fully operational by the first day of the semester.

OCT will operate four computer labs, all for classroom use only. There will be three PC labs and one Mac lab. Two labs will have 25 computer stations and two will have 30 computer stations. Room reservations will not be taken in advance for the fall semester but will be scheduled as the rooms become operational.

The 11 departments will move into their new offices during the fall semester on a staggered basis.
All is in preparedness. Please bear with us if there are some bumps in the road
as we go about making the new Powdermaker a truly state-of-the-art facility.

Fall 2003 Workshops

OCT and the Provost's Office are pleased to announce the fall schedule of training classes for faculty and staff. This year some new classes are being offered, including Introduction to the Mac OS X, Keeping Your PC Secure, introductory sessions on Powerpoint, Blackboard, Dreamweaver, and Adobe Acrobat. We will also be initiating online registration for the first time. Classes will begin in early October.

Complete details on class descriptions, times, locations, and how to register will be thoroughly explained in the September edition of TechTalk.

Web Announcements

No doubt you have noticed changes in the look of the QC Home Page over the past few months. Many of the pages are beginning to take on a standardized look with a "header" and "footer" that contain basic QC information that remains constant as you navigate from page to page.

Last month we moved our pages over to a new server. This server will allow us to use new technologies and will make the Queens College Web site more dynamic and interactive.

Web sites that are not maintained by OCT's Web Services Group will not be
stored on the new server, but instead on an alternate server called
"qcpages.qc.edu." If you currently have such a page, you can continue
to maintain your Web site as before.

A Web site is a constant work in progress. We intend to keep making improvements. If you have any questions or comments, you may contact the Web Services Group at webmaster@qc.edu.
