Fall
2003 Workshops Begin
The computer
training workshops being offered for faculty and staff by
OCT and the Provost's Office have begun.
It's not too late for you to register!
Most courses are still available.
Click
here to see a list of all
the open classes. Once you have decided what you'd like to take, click
your browser's "back" button and begin the registration process.
If the workshop you select is full, you will be contacted by an OCT
representative and placed on a waiting list. Once you finish, the screen
will show the courses you have registered for. This will be your only
confirmation that you have successfully been admitted to these classes.
If you have any questions or problems, please call OCT at extension
3009.
What
We Did This Summer
In addition
to setting up the technological aspects of Powdermaker Hall, we have
been busy with other projects this spring and summer. To mention a few:
- Kiely lecture halls 170
and 264 were upgraded with new media hardware and software to improve
classroom instruction.
- SMART Boards were installed
in two more classrooms.
- Computer classrooms in
Kiely 226 and 236 were upgraded with new computers, interactive headsets,
and Genesis software that controls groups of users.
- The large open lab in
I Building, I-200 and classroom I-201 were both upgraded with new
computers.
- Programs were designed
and implemented to allow students to apply for parking and register
for the College Proficiency Exam (CPE) online.
Did You
Know?
There
is a host of software available, through site licenses or educational
pricing, to faculty and staff at Queens College. For further information
, visit the OCT Web site to learn
about software availability, cost, and the licensing agreement that
applies to Queens College, or contact Sergio Cruz at 997-5959 or via
email at Sergio@qc.edu.
"Media
on Demand"
Yan Juras has
been made Director of Media Distribution. One of his goals is to bring
the college into the 21st century by allowing instructors to input media
support into their classrooms from a central location. These improvements
will assist the faculty with their instructional presentations and provide
our students with state-of-the-art facilities.
Media
Training
Now that each
classroom in Powdermaker Hall has its own media-support system, Media
Services is beginning to train departments and faculty on the use of
the equipment. They will be contacting departments for training sessions
in the rooms assigned to them. Faculty members can get training on a
mock-up system in the Media Services office by calling ext. 5960
Web Etiquette
If you are responsible for
maintaining and updating your department's
Web
site on the server , please be sure the following items are prominent
on your front page:
- Department's name, building
and room, phone numbers and e-mail address.
- Name of Chair or Department
Head.
- A link back to the QC
Home Page.
- A ""Schedule
of Classes" for your department's current semester should be
linked to the Registrar's Quasar list, which is updated frequently.
If you need assistance with
an existing site, visit the Web
services Web site and click on "this form" to download
a copy of our Web Services Request Form. Print it, fill it out with
your request. You can mail or fax the form back to us. Instructions
on the form tell you where to send it.
Loose
Wires
- Anyone who needs to schedule
spring semester classes in the computer classrooms in I-Building,
Kiely Learning Center, NSB, or Powdermaker Hall, please print out
the new Computer
Lab Request Form (you'll need Acrobat Reader to view it), and
return it before November 30. Also, fill out any software needs on
the form. Requests for software cannot be accommodated after that
date. All lab computers are already imaged with WIN XP and Office
XP.
- There is a change in
the Open Lab calendar for the Thanksgiving Holiday. I-Building Room
200 will be open for student usage on Saturday Nov. 29 and Sunday
Nov. 30th from 10:00am to 4:45pm. The calendar originally had the
Labs as closed on those dates.
