Fall 2004 Workshops
OCT and the Provost's Office
are pleased to announce the fall schedule of training classes for
faculty and staff. We have
designed a new program to make registration easy online. The program
allows you to view a list and description of classes being offered,
register, and add and delete courses. You will receive an email confirmation
and a reminder before your class is given. Classes will be held on
Fridays beginning October 1. Go to http://www.qc.edu/workshop to
register.
Online
Campus Directory Update
If you are
new faculty or staff or have recently changed offices, you need
to contact Telephone Services to have your updated information
put in the online campus
directory. They can't
do it unless they are informed by you or your department. The extension
is 5686.
Also, it is advisable that all faculty and staff have a campus email
address. More and more, information is being delivered by email only.
Without an email address, you will miss a lot of campus information.
If you need an email address or are not sure if you have one, you can
contact the Help Desk at extension 4444 or visit them in I Building,
Room, 133.
OCT Computer Labs
Faculty members who wish to schedule
classes in OCT's computer classrooms across campus should complete
the online Computer Lab Request form. It can be completed online
by going to http://www.qc.edu/OCT/lab_request_form
Software Licensing
A
new online software licensing program makes it easy for you to purchase
software for your office computer. By going to http://www.qc.edu/OCT/software_licensing,
you can see the cost and availability of software on campus. You
can then request the software, create an invoice online, print the
form and mail it with a check or a budget transfer authorization
memo to the address listed on the site.
Hardware
and Software Procurement Procedures
The
Office of Converging Technologies is committed to providing the
best possible support for all hardware and software in use at the
campus. Hardware refers to objects that you can actually touch,
like disks, disk drives, display screens, keyboards, printers,
boards, and chips*. Software is defined as computer applications
or data. Anything that can be stored electronically is software.
Please keep
the following in mind when you’re planning to purchase hardware
and/or software:
• OCT
can assist you in getting quotes.
• OCT will recommend systems, devices, and/or software that will be compatible
with our existing infrastructure. Please contact the Help Desk (email: help@qc.edu or
x4444) for more information and a list of current hardware/software standards.
• When purchasing desktops, we recommend and can support IBM
or Apple Macintosh.
• When purchasing laptops, we recommend and can help support
IBM and Apple Macintosh.
• When purchasing desktops or laptops from IBM, please be sure
that they come with a 3-Year Limited Warranty plus 3-Year Next Business
Day On-Site Service. Apple Macintosh purchases as well as laptops
purchased from IBM should also carry a similar warranty.
• Printer purchases must include network cards. For printer standards,
please contact the Help Desk.
• To assist you in obtaining the University’s software
educational pricing for personal, research, and/or administrative
use, please contact Sergio Cruz at sergio@qc.edu
or x5959. You may also visit OCT’s software licensing and availability
website at http://www.qc.cuny.edu/OCT/software_licensing
• Software purchases for instructional use in the computer labs might qualify
for purchase through Tech Fee funding. Please contact Sergio Cruz for more information.
• Faculty who wish to evaluate software for instructional use should contact
Dr. Ken Lord, Assistant to the Provost for Educational Technology, who will arrange
for the software to be installed in the Faculty Development Center (located in
I Building 2nd floor) for evaluation. Dr. Lord can be reached at lord@cs.qc.edu
