For the Unemployed
We have put together this list of resources that we hope will be of some assistance to those who are unemployed and / or experiencing financial difficulties:
1) Financial Aid for students in the College's degree programs:
--- If you have not yet filed for financial aid and you or your parents have recently become unemployed, begin by filing the regular way --- follow our filing instructions at http://www.qc.cuny.edu/ADMISSIONS/FA/Pages/default.aspx . Contact us a week or two after you've completed the applications on the web to be sure we received the application information electronically. Then bring documentation of the change to a financial aid counselor in Financial Aid Services and ask for a review of your aid eligibility. Information on the various grant, work and loan aid programs available to students in the degree programs is on our web site.
--- If you or your parents are now receiving unemployment benefits and / or your financial aid eligibility has already been evaluated based on a period when you / they had much higher income --- see a financial aid counselor in Financial Aid Services with documentation and ask for a review of your aid eligibility.
--- NOTE in looking at the aid programs and eligibility requirements that: 1) the Pell Grant is not available to students who already have a Bachelor's Degree. 2) aid programs offered through the FInancial Aid Office at Queens College are not available to students in courses of study outside of the regular degree programs.
2) For students in the College's Continuing Education Program
Some training awards are available through the various governments --- note that we have been advised that eligible programs at Queens College for students applying for the awards in this list below are only those in the Continuing Education Program. At Queens College, only students in these programs (NOT in the regular degree programs) can be assisted by the following grants, although the overall services of the agencies are available to all:
--- the Continuing Education Program has in the past had connections to some grant / voucher programs available to the unemployed and those with low incomes through local workforce1 offices. Their materials have in the past referred students to http://www.nyc.gov/html/sbs/wf1/html/contact/contact.shtml#qn .
--- The National Emergency Grant - Referrals to some of our continuing education programs for training under this grant is sometimes available through a NY State Department of Labor / Unemployment Counselor familiar with the NEG program.
3) Unemployment Insurance
--- Filing a Claim See http://www.labor.state.ny.us/ui/how_to_file_claim.shtm
--- Extensions - current and proposed See http://www.labor.state.ny.us/ui/claimantinfo/ExtendedBenefits.shtm--- Special Hurricane Sandy / Disaster Unemployment Benefits - see http://www.labor.ny.gov/ui/2012-sandy-services.shtm
