BACKGROUND:

Founded with the blessing of New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, Queens College opened its doors on October 11, 1937 as “the people’s college on the hill.” The first public college in the borough, it charged no tuition; many of the 197 students in that initial graduating class were first and second-generation immigrants who never could have afforded a college education otherwise. Today over 18,000 students from 140 countries are enrolled. “The faces of our students reflect the changing demographics of Queens and New York City,” says Queens College President James Muyskens, “but they possess the same talent, passion and dedication as our first graduates.”
