AUTHOR MARY GORDON WINS THE 2007 STORY PRIZE;

WILL READ AT QUEENS COLLEGE ON MARCH 27

-- Leonard Lopate to Interview Gordon Following Her Reading--

FLUSHING, NY, March 15, 2007– On Tuesday, March 27 at 7 pm, the Queens College Evening Readings Series will present Mary Gordon. Leonard Lopate of public radio station WNYC will interview her on-stage after the reading.

Mary Gordon is the author of many works of fiction, including Final Payments, The Company of Women, Men and Angels, The Other Side, and The Rest of Life, as well as several works of nonfiction, including The Shadow Man and Seeing Through Places. She is the recipient of a Lila Acheson Wallace Reader’s Digest Writer’s Award and a Guggenheim fellowship. Her most recent collection, The Stories of Mary Gordon, was selected from among 65 books for the Story Prize. First awarded in 2005, the Story Prize is an annual book award that honors an outstanding collection of short stories. Raised in Queens, Gordon graduated from Barnard College, where she is now chairwoman of the English Department. Her upcoming book, Reading Jesus, is “an alternative, nonfundamentalist interpretation of the Gospels.”

Newsweek calls Gordon “a humane, masterly novelist [whose] great gift is making us care about her people.” The New York Times describes her work as “a splendid balancing act of the intellect and the emotions on a high-tension wire. . . . Mary Gordon’s characters are so strong and rounded that one flinches in their presence,” and the The Philadelphia Inquirer says her “subtle images evoke the power of uncontrollable events, and equally uncontrollable emotions, to brim up from even the calmest surfaces and wash us away.”

This event takes place in the Music Building of Queens College, 65-30 Kissena Boulevard, Flushing. Admission is $15; tickets for individual Evening Readings events are not available in advance, but go on sale at 6:45 pm on the evening of each reading. All seats are general admission.
