Media Advisory for: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2 PM (Eve of Veterans Day)

WHAT: Ceremony to dedicate the new World War II Veterans Memorial Plaza at Queens College (over 60% of Queens College students enlisted or were called to duty). The inscribed names of 58 students and one staff member who gave their lives will be read by history students who researched the circumstances of their deaths.
  • Posting of Colors by the 800th Military Police Brigade of Uniondale, N.Y.
  • Unveiling of three granite monuments
  • National Anthem and “God Bless America” sung by Aaron Copland
    School of Music Chorus
  • Taps played by Buglers, 77th Regional Readiness Command

WHO: Attending will be:
  • Arnold Franco, class of ’43, now age 83, donated $100,000 towards this plaza and intergenerational history research project. A former military code breaker, he holds France’s highest award, The Legion of Honor.
  • Rosemary Minnick, a resident of Freeport. Her brother, Robert, 22, a Queens College senior and pilot, was killed in 1941 while serving.
  • Queens College President James Muyskens; Major General William Torpeluk, Fort Totten Commander; NYS Senator Frank Padavan; NYC Councilmembers James Gennaro and Hiram Monserrate.
  • Poet Samuel Menashe, class of ’47, Battle of the Bulge survivor and recipient of the Neglected Masters Award from the Poetry Society of America, who will read poetry selections.
  • Professor Joel Allen (History) who oversaw the WWII student research project.
