QUEENS COLLEGE OPENS NEW FITNESS CENTER TO COMMUNITY
FLUSHING, N.Y., September 14, 2006—In a ribbon-cutting ceremony today, Queens College opened its new, state-of-the-art fitness center. Doubled in size to 5,000 square feet, the center now “features all the latest in training room equipment,” according to Rick Wettan, the college’s Athletics director. Included are free weights; 15 to 20 benches and squat racks; over 30 pieces of aerobics equipment such as bicycles, steppers and treadmills; and at least another 32 Cybex weight training stations. The center also features air conditioning, a new floor and mirrors.
The new fitness center was made possible thanks to Council Member James Gennaro’s continued dedication to improving higher education. At the request of Queens College, Gennaro provided $200,000 for the project from his own discretionary funds in the 2006 fiscal year budget. “This new fitness center will give Queens College students strong bodies to support their strong minds,” said Gennaro. “It serves Queens College students and the public so that the whole community can lead healthier lives. The benefits of exercise are universal.”
Thanks to the work of Assembly Member Nettie Mayersohn, the State Assembly provided an additional $100,000 to complete the project. Both Gennaro and Mayersohn attended the opening, as well as City Council Member Helen Sears.
The public may use the facility Monday through Thursday from 6 to 10 pm, Friday from 6 to 9 pm, and weekends from 10 am to 4 pm. The fee for membership is $210 from September 9 through May 23, 2007, which includes the use of showers. A separate summer fee will be charged. Anyone purchasing a fitness room membership may purchase passes at half price for other college athletics facilities such as the tennis center and pool.
