--Designed to Help Prepare Youngsters for New York State Standard Tests
In Reading, Writing and Math --
FLUSHING, NY, September 8, 2005—A Saturday education, enrichment and recreation program for children in grades K-8, designed to prepare them for the New York State Standard Tests in reading, writing and math, will begin at Queens College on September 24. Applications for registration are currently being accepted through this date for the fall semester.
Classes, which include educational and recreational components, will meet from 9 am to 3 pm for 10 successive Saturdays, excluding November 26. Each session includes two classes in reading/writing and math; an art workshop, science investigations or computer enrichment class; and in the afternoon, recreational activities with an emphasis on physical fitness, team building, athletic skill development and sportsmanship. Children will be served a full lunch and two snacks.
The reading/writing and math programs reinforce the concepts described in the New York State Standards through mini-lessons and small group activities. Reading/writing standards will include skills-based practice and responses to literature that encourage children to predict, analyze and organize information. The math component includes practice and problem-solving using real world situations that help youngsters learn critical thinking, reasoning and other strategies. All instructors are certified and currently teaching in the New York metropolitan area.
Tuition is $600 per child with a non-refundable registration fee of $20. Registration applications for fall 2005, winter 2006 and spring 2006 sessions may be obtained from the Queens College Athletics Department, 65-30 Kissena Blvd., Flushing, N.Y. 11367-1597 or by calling:
718-997-2773. A confirmation and medical release card will be mailed prior to the start of each session.
