ASIAN/AMERICAN CENTER AT QUEENS COLLEGE PRESENTS
A PUBLIC FORUM, “ASIANS EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES:
CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS FOR POLITICAL PARTICIPATION”

Following the presidential election of 2004 and with local government elections ahead, this public forum focuses on the issues of community empowerment through greater political participation and representation by Asian and other minority populations of New York City. A significant percentage of our communities consists of “New Americans,” including those who have recently been naturalized as citizens, and the young Americans who live in immigrant households. The forum will explore the political landscape of the post-Civil Rights period and will address critical issues and challenges faced by minorities in fully exerting their partnership in the political arena.

Confirmed speakers:

  • John Liu, New York City Council member
  • Glen Magpantay, Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund
  • Tong Suk Kim, Korean American Voters Council
  • Deepa Iyer, South Asian American Leaders of Tomorrow (SAALT)
  • Bryan Pu Folkes, New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE)
  • Morshed Alam, New American Democratic Club
  • Student Interns: Political Empowerment and Political Project (PEP), Asian/American Center, Queens College

The forum will take place in the Queens College, Student Union 4th Floor, Ballroom. Dinner and discussion will follow panel presentations.

To RSVP, contact the Asian/American Center at 718-997-3050.

The Political Empowerment and Participation Project at Asian/American Center is generously funded by World Journal.
