Queens College Choral Society Will Hold Auditions For Fall Performances Of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana

-- Art Contest for Students Aged 10 to 17 Calls for Creation of “Magical Images”

Inspired by the Music; Winning Entry Will be Featured on the Concert Program’s Cover --

FLUSHING, NY, August 24, 2009 – The Queens College Choral Society seeks new members for its fall concert season that will culminate with a choreographed performance of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.  Auditions will take place on Wednesday, September 2, 9 and 16, from 6:00 – 7:15 pm in Room 246 of LeFrak Concert Hall.  Choral Society rehearsals are held from 7:30 – 9:45 pm on Wednesday evenings in Room 270 of the same building.  There will be a New Member Welcome Party on September 16.

In conjunction with the performance of Orff’s choral-orchestral masterpiece on December 19 with the college’s Department of Drama, Theater, and Dance, the society is sponsoring an art contest for students aged 10 to 17 to create “magical images” that capture the essence of the music. The contest was inspired by the work’s full title:  “Carmina Burana:  Secular Songs for Singers and Choruses to be Sung Together With Instruments and Magical Images” and coincides with Orff’s vision of a synergy among the elements of music, dance and visual design. The 1937 composition remains one of the most popular pieces of the classical music repertoire.

The winner of the contest will receive $250 cash, and his/her artwork will be published on the concert program’s cover.  The best entries will be displayed in the lobby of QC’s Colden Auditorium on the evening of the performance.  Deadline for submissions is October 19, and there is a $25 registration fee.  For complete submission guidelines, visit  or contact Music Director James John at 718-997-3818 or

From its founding in 1941 the Queens College Choral Society has offered students and faculty along with members from communities throughout Queens, Manhattan, and Nassau/Suffolk Counties the opportunity to learn and perform choral masterpieces.  The society welcomes people of all ages and backgrounds and is open to anyone with prior singing experience.
