FLUSHING, NY, September 25, 2009 -- The Classical Singers Career Development Club (CSCDC) of Queens College announces two performances of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide in the LeFrak Concert Hall at the Aaron Copland School of Music on Saturday, October 17,
at 8 pm, and Sunday, October 18, at 4:15 pm.

This student-run production is presented in association with the college’s Department of Drama, Theatre and Dance and the Aaron Copland School of Music.  It will feature musical direction by graduate student conductors Ben Arendsen and Rafael Luz, and stage direction by students Chad Smyser and Max Roll.  The QC orchestra as well as talented alumni will also participate in the performance, open to the public, which is part of the college’s homecoming weekend.  Suggested admission price is $15; $10 for students and seniors.  Donations may be made at the door.

Candide is an operetta with music composed by Leonard Bernstein, based on the satirical novella by Voltaire. It tells the story of Candide, a naive young man and illegitimate nephew of a German baron.  When Candide gets caught kissing the baron’s daughter Cunégonde, he is exiled from his castle.  Candide then embarks on a series of exotic and often horrific adventures around the world in search of Cunégonde, which eventually bring him enlightenment and wisdom.
