A Message from Queens College President James Muyskens to the QC Community September 18, 2010

The college sustained considerable damage from the storm Thursday night that moved through our area. First and foremost, we are grateful that no one was injured despite falling tree limbs and other materials flying about. We can all be very proud of the real spirit of community that prevailed here among faculty, students and staff immediately following the storm. People looked out for each other, faculty met their classes and everyone was calm despite the fact that we were all essentially trapped on campus for hours.

Although it will take months to repair some of the damage, notably the tennis structure, we are fully functioning this weekend for all planned activities. On Monday classes will resume according to our usual schedule.

Such a positive outcome takes extraordinary dedication and teamwork. My special thanks go to our colleagues in Security, whose diligence kept us safe and who provided assistance to those in need. Our colleagues in Buildings and Grounds worked through the night cleaning up, restoring power, and making repairs. They truly are the heroes. I also am grateful to  OCT staff for working overnight into Friday to keep our network and website functional when power was out and the server room needed constant attention. And I thank Office of Communications staff for updating the website from home Thursday night and keeping the campus informed via QC mailer.

We did not work alone. On hand during the storm were our local firefighters and police; the New York City Department of Parks assisted us with tree removal on Friday. CUNY officials also visited to help us assess the damage. We are truly grateful to Chancellor Goldstein for the support we have already received, and the support to come.

At the Senate meeting on Thursday when I stated that we face some major challenges, I hadn’t imagined that a storm’s fury would very soon be added to the list. Everyone at Queens College pulled together and rose to this challenge. I know that despite any difficulties or inconveniences in the months ahead, we will continue to come together as our beautiful campus is repaired and restored.
