BACKGROUND: The Queens College presentation of Brigadoon will feature a full orchestra onstage with the performers and the original choreography by Agnes de Mille with input from de Mille's one-time assistant Gemze de Lappe. Brigadoon is the story of an enchanted Scottish town that comes to life for one day every hundred years, with a century passing as if it were one night. Cast under a spell that saved it from destruction, no one can ever leave the townotherwise the townand all its inhabitantswill disappear into the mist forever. And so the unexpected arrival of two American tourists who stumble upon the village while lost in the Scottish Highlands threatens all its residents. First produced by the legendary team of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe in 1947, Brigadoon was loosely based on a German folk tale about the mythical village of Germelshausen. Because the production came close on the heels of World War II, when presneting a German-themed musical would have been unpopular with audiences, it was resituated in Scotland.
