Student Ioannis Demopoulos Earns First Place in the CUNY Nobel Science Challenge

Queens College student Ioannis Demopoulos (right), pictured here with the college’s Dean of Math and Natural Sciences Larry Liebovitch, was awarded first-place honors in the physiology/medicine category at a February 24 ceremony honoring the 2010 CUNY Nobel Science Challenge winners. Demopoulos, who won an iMac computer, wrote an essay describing the scientific concepts at the basis of Nobel Laureate Robert G. Edwards’ research in the development of in vitro fertilization. The goal of the CUNY Nobel Science Challenge—which also awards honors for essays in the fields of Chemistry, Physics and Economics—is to make the science behind the prize accessible to the general public. The competition is judged by the university’s distinguished professors.
