Tony Award-Winning Playwright of M. Butterfly, David Henry Hwang, in Conversaton with Award-Winning Poet Cathy Park Hong on October 12

--Writers to Appear at Queens College as Guests of the Literary Legacy Program, in Partnership with the Poetry Society of America--

FLUSHING, NY, October 1, 2012 — Celebrated playwright David Henry Hwang will join award-winning poet Cathy Park Hong at Queens College for Literary Legacy: Two Writers in Conversation on Craft and Process, on Friday, October 12 at 6:30 pm in Rosenthal Library, Room 230. They will read from their work and answer questions from students in the college’s MFA Program in Creative Writing and Literary Translation about writing and issues of craft specific to their genres. This free and open-to-the-public event is being hosted by the college’s MFA Program in Creative Writing and Literary Translation in conjunction with the Poetry Society of America.

Hwang received Tony and Drama Desk Awards for M. Butterfly, which was also a Pulitzer Prize finalist. His play Chinglish, which ran on Broadway through January 2012, was called “shrewd, timely and razor-sharp” by The Chicago Tribune. Hwang’s screenwriting credits include the film version of M. Butterfly, which starred Jeremy Irons; Golden Gate, with Matt Dillon and Joan Chen; and, as co-author, Possession, starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Aaron Eckhart. He also co-authored the libretto for the Broadway musical Aida, and wrote the libretti for the 2002 Tony Award-nominated revival of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Flower Drum Song and Disney’s Tarzan.

A recipient of National Endowment for the Arts and Guggenheim Foundation fellowships, Hwang sits on the Council of the Dramatists Guild and has also served as a member of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. Hwang, who resides in Brooklyn, earned a bachelor of arts degree from Stanford University and attended the Yale School of Drama.

Cathy Park Hong has published three collections of poetry, including Translating Mo’um; Dance Dance Revolution—for which she received the Barnard Women Poets Prize—and Engine Empire. She is the recipient of fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts and the New York Foundation for the Arts. She has also received a Village Voice Fellowship for Minority Reporters. Hong is an assistant professor at Sarah Lawrence College and on the faculty of the MFA program at Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Queens College MFA Program in Creative Writing and Literary Translation, introduced in fall 2007, is the newest of CUNY’s MFA programs. Directed by poet Nicole Cooley, it is one of only two in the country to include literary translation as a parallel track—a reflection of the international atmosphere of the campus and its home borough. Faculty members are all award-winning writers dedicated to teaching. Students also benefit from access to the wider arts community that is New York City. For more information, visit www.qc.cuny.edu/Creative_Writing

The Poetry Society of America, the nation’s oldest poetry organization, was founded in 1910. Its mission is to build a larger and more diverse audience for poetry, to encourage a deeper appreciation of the vitality and breadth of poetry in the cultural conversation, and to place poetry at the crossroads of American life. For more information, visit www.poetrysociety.org.
