Queens College Offers Wine-Making Tours of Israel, Jan. 9 - 18, 2013

FLUSHING, NY, November 14, 2012 – Israel has been a wine-producing region since ancient times, but its wine industry has become internationally recognized only during the last 10 to 15 years, with some saying that it even rivals those of France and Italy. In that spirit, Queens College’s Office of Global Education Initiatives and its Center for Jewish Studies are offering alumni and friends “Wine-making: Past and Present,” a tour in Israel from January 9-18, 2013, led by Rabbi Moshe Shur. And you don’t have to be an oenophile to enjoy it.

The tour itinerary will include a visit to Recanati Winery and Vineyards, Galil Mountain, Ella and other wineries and vineyards, where participants will learn from experts about the history, origins and renaissance of Israeli wines—and of course have opportunities to sample them. In addition, there will be stops at such must-see sites as Jerusalem, the Old City, the Dead Sea, Masada, the Galilee, Safad, Golan and Tel Aviv. Da’at Educational Expeditions and Palm Bay International wine distributors are among the tour’s sponsors. The present cost per person (double occupancy) is $5,200, which includes land package, airfare from New York City, five-star hotels, transfers, some meals, bus and tour guides, entrance fees, tips and travel insurance. For more information, call 718-997-4530 or email TourWithShur@gmail.com

Moshe Shur is a rabbi, scholar and musician. Until last year he served as director of the QC Hillel Foundation. He still teaches Judaism and Jewish mysticism for the college’s Department of History and Jewish Studies program. Known as the “Rockin’ Rabbi,” Shur was a founding member of the first Jewish rock group, the Diaspora Yeshiva Band, and has recorded 10 CDs with his own Moshe Shur Band and Sons.
